Sunset Boulevard (1950) – Billy Wilder
As I return to the films of yesteryear, thanks to DK Canada’s The Movie Book, I settled in for a film that I’ve never been sure I wanted to watch, Sunset Boulevard. I just never imagined it would be my thing, but it does have a great pedigree including a cast that includes Gloria Swanson…
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1994) – Armageddon Game, and Whispers
Station log: stardate unknown Morgan Gendel, Ira Steven Behr and James Crocker pen this episode from a story by Gendel. The episode debuted on 30 January, 1994. This ends up being another O’Brien (Colm Meaney) and Bashir (Alexander Siddig) story. The pair are helping a pair of races, the T’Lani and the Kelleruns put an…
Miami Vice (1984) – Brother’s Keeper
1984. This was a big year for me. It featured one of the biggest most influential moves of my life, as well as helping to define the person I would become. I became more and more immersed in pop culture. When Miami Vice came along, it was getting into pop music in a big way,…
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1994) – Homeward, and Sub Rosa
Captain’s log: stardate 47423.9 Surprise! Worf (Michael Dorn) has another brother, a foster one, Nikolai Rozhenko (Paul Sorvino) – and he is violating the Prime Directive! This episode was written by Naren Shankar from a story by Spike Steingasser. It first aired on 17 January, 1994. And for the first time, we see Dorn in…
Se7en (1995) – David Fincher
The final big title in the Great Movies – 100 Years of Film book in the Thriller section is The Silence of the Lambs. It should not be a surprise that I have covered that one before, as well as most of the recommendations, except for this one, David Fincher’s noir-esque thriller, Se7en. Starring Brad…
Before Midnight (2013) – Richard Linklater
Nine years after Before Sunset, and almost twenty since Before Sunrise, we check in with Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) again. And this is the next title from DK Canada’s The Movie Book’s What Else to Watch list following my screening of Boyhood. Travelling in Greece as a family, including two daughters, the…
Doctor Who (Peter Capaldi) – The Eaters of Light, World Enough and Time, and The Doctor Falls
This week is my final entry in the Doctor Who category until Series 11, and the 2017 Christmas special come to blu-ray. I began this journey on 25 January, 2014 – a story a week (sometimes two with the revitalised series) and now, I’ve come to its (temporary) conclusion. Rona Munro, who wrote the classic…
Dirty Dancing (1987) – Emile Ardolino
The final recommendation from the Great Movies – 100 Years of Film book following my screening of Grease is Dirty Dancing. This is a film I hadn’t seen since it was originally released back in 1987 (and I stole some of the music for a drama presentation I was doing in English class). Coming to…
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1994) – Rivals, and The Alternate
Station log: stardate unknown Rivals was written by Joe Menosky from a story by Jim Trombetta and Michael Piller. It originally aired on 2 January, 1994. Quark (Armin Shimerman) has trouble on the Promenade when an El-Aurian con artist, Martus Mazur (Chris Sarandon) arrives on the station and plans to open a competing bar. Mazur…
