Gravity (2013) – Alfonso Cuaron
To keep things fresh, I’m leaping to the back of DK Canada’s The Movie Book just so I can shake things up a a bit. Consequently I get to jump into Alfonso Cuaron’s highly enjoyable sci-fi thriller Gravity starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Curaon who directed such fantastic films as Y Tu Mama Tambien,…
Space: 1999 (1976) – Brian the Brain, and New Adam New Eve
We are afforded a couple generic, run of the mill episodes, this week with this installment of Space: 1999. Both feature stories that have been told before in other sci-fi venues, and arguably better as well. First up is Brian the Brain, written by Jack Ronder, this story first aired on 2 October, 1976. There’s…
Innocent Blood (1992) – John Landis
Sooner or later a John Landis film had to pop up in DK Canada’s Monsters in the Movies book. Despite the fact that the famed director wrote it, he would be remiss if he didn’t include his own films in this highly enjoyable book. Consequently I happily sank my fangs into this vampire tale that…
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1995) – The Die is Cast, and Explorers
Station log: stardate unknown Ronald D. Moore pens the conclusion to last week’s cliffhanger in this episode that first aired on 1 May, 1995. Tain (Paul Dolley) with Garak (Andrew Robinson) at his side, along with an uneasy alliance with the Romulans prepares to enter the Gamma Quadrant through the wormhole in their search for…

Music legend Miles Davis makes an appearance in this week’s Miami Vice installment, appearing in Junk Love that was written by Julia Cameron and first aired on 8 November, 1985. Davis plays the Ivory Jones, he runs a high-class bordello that Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) and Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Micheal Thomas) bust. In the course…
The Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla (2003) – Stephen King
Roland Deschain of the line of Eld, and his ka-tet, Jake Chambers, Eddie and Susannah Dean, and Oy the billy-bumbler, take on the role of The Magnificent Seven or The Seven Samurai in the next volume of Stephen King’s opus, the Dark Tower saga. The fifth installment of the fantasy/western/ horror/science fiction series sees the…
Star Trek: Voyager (1995) – Emanations, and Prime Factors
Captain’s log: stardate 48623.5 Brannon Braga pens this Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) episode that first aired on 13 March, 1995. Voyager is investigating mineral deposits in an asteroid field when they discover it also serves as a burial ground for a nearby race. They are teleported into the asteroid by an unknown means, and this…
Lost in Translation (2003) – Sofia Coppola
The next big title in DK Canada’s highly enjoyable The Movie Book is La Dolce Vita, which having previously reviewed for the blog, I moved on to the What Else to Watch list and was delighted to be able to dig into this already classic film, Lost in Translation, starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson….
Van Helsing (2004) – Stephen Sommers
After his fairly positive success with two Mummy movies, and the cult favorite Deep Rising, Stephen Sommers looked to do an homage to the Universal Monsters and hopefully launch a new tentpole franchise with the Hugh Jackman led Van Helsing. This is the next recommendation from DK Canada’s Monsters in the Movies by John Landis,…
