You thought some of the previous episodes were strange (and occasionally bad?), well this one, All That Glisters, is right up there. And it’s the first one up this week as we jump into more adventures with Moonbase Alpha. Set some 562 days after leaving Earth orbit, All That Glisters was written by Keith Miles,…

Gravity (2013) – Alfonso Cuaron
To keep things fresh, I’m leaping to the back of DK Canada’s The Movie Book just so I can shake things up a a bit. Consequently I get to jump into Alfonso Cuaron’s highly enjoyable sci-fi thriller Gravity starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Curaon who directed such fantastic films as Y Tu Mama Tambien,…
Space: 1999 (1976) – Journey to Where, and One Moment of Humanity
Moonbase Alpha continues to hurtle among the stars drawing us with them as Koenig (Martin Landau), Russell (Barbara Bain), Alan (Nick Tate), Maya (Catherine Schell), Tony (Tony Arnholt) and the rest of the crew try to survive. Trouble rears its head this week in Journey to Where, penned by Donald James this episode first debuted…
Space: 1999 (1976) – The Metamorph, and The Exiles
New uniforms, additions to the cast, and the unmentioned disappearance of other cast members propels Moonbase Alpha into its second season. The changes aren’t discussed, and we’re thrown into the new season with a brand new theme and opening credits which introduces new cast member Catherine Schell before her character is even introduced in the…
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1995) -Past Tense: Part I, and Part II
Station log: stardate 48481.2 Robert Hewitt Wolfe pens this stellar episode from a story he developed with Ira Steven Behr. First broadcast on 2 January, 1995, the story follows Sisko (Avery Brooks), Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and Dax (Terry Farrell) as, thanks to a transporter accident while the Defiant is in orbit around Earth, end up…
The Return of Dracula (1958) – Paul Landres
Dracula does California! And it’s gonna be an entertaining (and pretty bad ride) as I dig into the next Vampire title in DK Books’ Monsters in the Movies by director John Landis. A Dracula (Francis Lederer) with some strange powers – like apparating (and not a glimpse of fangs) comes to smalltown California, USA after…
Space: 1999 (1975/1976) – Matter of Life and Death, and Earthbound
Doctor Helena Russell’s (Barbara Bain) presumed dead husband, Lee Russell (Richard Johnson) mysteriously appears on a planet christened Terra Nova in this episode penned by Art Wallace and Johnny Byrne. This one first debuted on 27 November, 1975, and honestly, is a bit of a low point for the first season. It’s obvious that Lee…
Space: 1999 (1975) – Death’s Other Dominion, and Voyager’s Return
Moonbase Alpha and its inhabitants encounter members of a lost Earth Expedition on the far-flung world of Ultima Thule in Death’s Other Dominion. Written by Anthony Terpiloff and Elizabeth Barrows, this episode first debuted on 2 October, 1975. There’s no suggestion of where Ultima Thule is in the galaxy, and how long Alpha has been…
POPnology at the Ontario Science Centre
It’s summer vacation, time for camps, bike rides, beaches, family trips, seemingly endless days spread out before the young to enjoy, to forget the long reach of scholastic achievement, teachers, and books. So how can you make learning fun, and ensure that the entire family is entertained? Combine education with entertainment, with movies, and pop…
Doctor Who (Peter Capaldi) – The Lie of the Land, and Empress of Mars
The conclusion to the Monk Trilogy is our first episode this week. Written by Toby Whithouse, the episode first aired on 3 June, 2017. The Monks have changed history, having assumed control of Earth when power of consent was given by Bill (Pearl Mackie) at the conclusion of last week’s episode, when she had them…
