I remember reading this book in paperback when it first came out. It was summer, and I was in Toronto working to save (a little) money for my post secondary education. I was delighted in the nostalgia in it, and recalled being moved by the tale within its pages. When I came across it in…
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1996) – Crossfire, and Return to Grace
Station log: stardate unknown Rene Echevarria pens the first episode up this week, which originally aired on 29 January, 1996. First Minister Shakaar (Duncan Regehr) comes aboard the station, and complications ensue for Odo (Rene Auberjonois) as he must confront his feelingss for Major Kira (Nana Visitor) when she begins to fall in love with…
Smallfoot (2018) – Blu-Ray
Coning home on blu-ray today from Warner Brothers is the family film Smallfoot. Boasting an all-star cast including Channing Tatum, Danny DeVito, James Corden, Zendaya, Common and LeBron James, the family film is definitely one that will keep younger viewers entertained during the holiday season. Featuring songs and tons of visual gags the story follows…
The Nun (2018) – Blu-Ray
Warner Brothers guides us back into the dark of the Conjuring universe with The Nun (Bonnie Aarons), which looks into the character that haunts Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) in the first two Conjuring titles, detailing her personal history, and possession by the demon that corrupts her soul. Set in 1952, this film marks, to date,…
Blade II (2002) – Guillermo del Toro
Guillermo del Toro’s other vampire movie is the next title I came across in DK Canada’s Monsters in the Movies book. A stronger entry than the first film, del Toro proves he can handle action beats with ease, and can work within the confines of a franchise. Wesley Snipes returns as Marvel’s day walking vampire…
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) – Robert Rodriguez
The solid team of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino paired up for the first time with From Dusk Til Dawn the next stop in the vampire section of Monsters in the Movies, the wonderful coffee table tome from DK Canada. Featuring an all star cast, as well as being stacked with cult favorites, the film…
Space: 1999 (1977) – The Immunity Syndrome, and The Dorcons
This is it, the last week of Space: 1999, and while some of it has been very good, and a number of stories showed some promise, the series, as a whole, has not weathered the decades as well as it could have. The penultimate episode is The Immunity Syndrome (not to be confused with the…
The Little Vampire (2000) – Uli Edel
Even family films get into the vampire act as I learn with the next stop in DK Canada’s Monsters in the Movies, the coffee table tome by legendary director John Landis. That film is The Little Vampire, based on the book by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg. Starring Jonathan Lipnicki, following his endearing turn in Jerry Maguire, the…
Star Trek: Voyager (1996) – Prototype, and Alliances
Captain’s log: stardate unknown Jonathan Frakes directs this episode from a script by Nicholas Corea that sees the Voyager picking up an automated life form floating in the vastness of space. First airing on 15 January, 1996, the story let Torres (Roxann Dawson) step to the fore. Torres is sure that they can reactivate the…
Miami Vice (1986) – Stone’s War, and Killshot
Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) and Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Micheal Thomas) get caught up with journalist Ira Stone (Bob Balaban) again, when the reporter shows up in the aptly titled Stone’s War. Written and directed by David Jackson, the episode first debuted on 3 October, 1986. Stone comes to Crockett in Miami when he finally has…
