del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth is the next big recommendation from DK Canada’s The Movie Book, and the What Else to Watch list is filled with his titles as well, all of which I’ve had the opportunity to watch and review prior to this. And then I saw Hellboy listed in there as well and had…

Toronto After Dark 2019: The Wretched (2019) – Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce
Closing out the Toronto After dark film festival tonight at Scotibank Theater is the latest film from the Pierce Brothers as they have the Toronto Premiere of The Wretched. With overtones of 80s classics, like The Evil Dead and Fright Night (and going a little further back to the 70s with Jaws – I may…
Ulysses (1954) – Mario Camerini
Kirk Douglas stars in this Italian sword and sandals (and sorcery) epic that also features Anthony Quinn, and is the next film in DK Canada’s Monsters in the Movies book as I explore the chapter on Myths, Legends and Fairy Tales. Using Homer’s epic poem as its basis, the film follows Ulysses (Douglas) on his…
Toronto After Dark 2019 – Werewolf (2018) – Adrian Panek
A unique entry in Toronto After Dark’s film festival has its Canadian premiere at Scotiabank Theater this evening, the Polish film Werewolf. Filled with shades of Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Werewolf shows the horror of war, the deconstruction of our humanity by the most brutal cruelty man has ever known, the Nazis and their…
Star Trek: Voyager (1999) – Equinox: Part II, and Survival Instinct
Captain’s log: stardate unknown Brannon Braga and Joe Menosky pen the season opener from a story they created alongside Rick Berman, which concludes the Equinox story line. It opened the sixth season on 22 September, 1999. Intent on revenge, Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) pursues the Equinox, intent on putting a stop to Ransom (John Savage)….
Toronto After Dark 2019: The Assent (2019) – Pearry Teo
There’s a Barker/Lovecraftian feel to the gritty dirtiness of this entry in the Toronto After Dark film festival. Couched in a house covered in unnerving art, and filled with troubling apparitions and visions there is an aggressive edge to The Assent in the way it is shot, and the way the story unfolds. Mostly. Halfway…
Moonlighting (1986) – The Man Who Cried Wife, and Symphony in Knocked Flat
Kerry Ehrin pens this week’s first episode, The Man Who Cried Wife, which aired on 30 September, 1986. When James Bower (Stephen Godwin) kills his cheating wife, Melissa (Patricia Duff) in a moment of rage, he buries her in the forest, in an unmarked grave. But when he starts receiving phone calls from her he…
Galaxy Quest (1999) – 20th Anniversary Blu-Ray
Somehow, the now iconic science fiction comedy Galaxy Quest is turning twenty this year. That doesn’t seem possible. It’s as if someone enhanced the Omega 13 and shot us forward in time rather than in reverse. You see, I remember seeing it in the theater, laughing aloud at the realization that these filmmakers, these actors,…
Toronto After Dark 2019: Homewrecker (2019) – Zach Gayne
Toronto After Dark brings another Canadian film into their Film Festival with Zach Gayne’s Homewrecker, starring Precious Chong and Alex Essoe, and pairing these two actors on screen brings this somewhat familiar premise to an electric conclusion. Essoe is Michelle, a young millenial in a marriage she’s unsure of with the hopes of building a…
