Charade (1963) – Stanley Donen
The next title on the What Else to Watch list following the recommendation of Casablanca from The Movie Book, released by DK Canada, is this delightful romp starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. Also featuring turns by Walter Matthau and James Coburn, this romance mystery, with a healthy dose of comedy has a score by…
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1991) – Unification I & II
Captain’s log: stardate 45233.1 Written by Jeri Taylor from a story by Michael Piller and Rick Berman, the first part of this crossover two-parter first aired on 4 November, 1991. With the final voyage of the original Star Trek crew preparing for release in December (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country), and the death of…
The Shape of Water (2017) – Guillermo del Toro
del Toro’s latest film, The Shape of Water is very much a fairy tale for adults, as well as sharing a kinship with the horror films of the 1950s, specifically, 1954’s The Creature From the Black Lagoon (as well as to Abe Sapien as seen in del Toro’s own Hellboy series). But in this film,…
The Twilight Zone (1964) – Come Wander with Me, The Fear, and The Bewitchin’Pool
We arrive, this week, at our last stop in The Twilight Zone. The exploration of The Complete Series comes to its ultimate conclusion with this last trio of episodes. First up is Come Wander with Me. Written by Anthony Wilson, this episode, directed by Richard Donner, debuted on 22 May 1964. The story follows musician…
The Jaws Log: Expanded Edition (1975/2005) – Carl Gottlieb
Anyone who has even visited the blog knows what my favourite movie is. I mean, it’s right there in the banner. Jaws has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, I have very few memories that would have occurred before I saw it, I mean I was three going…
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1991) – Disaster, and The Game
Captain’s log: stardate 45156.1 Airing on 21 October, 1991, Ronald D. Moore penned the teleplay for this episode from a story created by Ron Jarvis and Philip A. Scorza. Disaster plays much like an Irwin Allen version of a Star Trek episode. Attempting to push characters outside of their comfort zones, or put them in…
Blade Runner 2049 (2017) – Denis Villeneuve
Villeneuve’s stunningly beautiful sequel to the seminal, and iconic, 1982 Ridley Scott film is released to blu-ray and DVD today from Warner Brothers. With Scott serving as executive producer, and a story by original film scribe Hampton Fancher (joined by Michael Green), Villeneuve working with cinematographer Roger Deakins brings us another tale set in the…
South Park: The Complete Sixth Season
Paramount Pictures continues making me laugh with their re-release of the first seasons of South Park. I dug into the seventeen episodes with enthusiasm, and this may be my favourite season! We get Butters taking in his evil persona of Professor Chaos, Bebe gets her breasts and disrupts society, 80s movies get skewered (again), the…
The Greatest Showman (2017) – Michael Gracy
Last night I had a chance to take in Hugh Jackman’s passion project, The Greatest Showman, a musical based on the life of P.T. Barnum, as well as his famed circus. Jackman plays the titular character and easily slips back into his song and dance roots. Joining him on-screen is Michelle Williams, as Barnum’s wife,…
