Star Trek: Lower Decks (2022) – Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus, Trusted Sources, and The Stars at Night

Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus was written by Ben Rodgers and first aired on 13 October, 2022.

The episode gives us another holodeck movie, and you just know that’s going to be a lot of fun. It also means there are going to be lots of easter eggs and deep cut trivia. There’s a nod to V’ger, there are familiar looking fonts, some Regula I recycled sets, a riff on Carol Marcus, in fact there are a number of Wrath of Khan nods and references throughout, and each one is fun to catch.

It also gets some refs into Trek IV, and V! There’s some Generations stuff, there are tropes, there are cameos, hello Captain Sulu (George Takei!), and new designs for a new movie.

Boimler (Jack Quaid) and the team find themselves on a great adventure. He takes on an alter-ego in the film’s beginning (it’s the holodeck after all) but it doesn’t matter, as his friends still call him by his name. But following a chat with Ransom (Jerry O’Connell) he’s not as into it as he should be.

While Tendi (Noel Wells) and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) follow the film’s storyline, Boimler and Mariner (Tawny Newsome) find themselves on a quest for meaning, driven by Boimler’s need for more meaning after his clone on the Titan was KIA.

It’s fun, joyous, and reminds us of the need for some fun and the support of friends to get through tough times.

And then there’s the cliffhanger ending – William Boimler, Section 31!

Written by Ben M. Waller Trusted Sources debuted on 20 October, 2022. The crew of the cerritos are a but on edge when a reporter, Victoria Nuze comes aboard.

The Cerritos is assigned Project Swing-by, which is to check in on previously contacted planets, and make sure all is well. There are some nods to TNG and TOS era planets, situations, and characters.

It’s good fun, though Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) is less than thrilled with the arrival of the reporter. There’s some fun stuff with previously visited worlds and familiar tropes. This one is more fun to watch and catch all the refs as you go. But there is a lot of TNG stuff.

When Mariner causes problems on the Cerritos, Freeman assigns her to Starbase 80, so she leaves Starfleet to pal around with Aberdeen (Georgia King) instead.

There’s also the reveal of the new Texas-class starship, and what that may mean for Starfleet.

How will this all play out? I guess we’ll find out in the season finale, next!

The Stars at Night was writtten by series creator an show runner Mike McMahan. It closed out the season on 27 October, 2022.

The Cerritos finds itself in a race. They need to complete missions before the automated Texas-class ships, to prove that starships need crews, and that intuition that serves captains and their crews. And what program could possibly be overseeing the Texas-class? I wonder.

We also have to wonder if Mariner is coming back to Starfleet or not. She starts to wonder who is funding Aberdeen.

There are tons of fun references again: the Riker maneuver, a reference to Captain Styles refernce thanks to a swagger stick, as well as bad-admirals, badmirals in the Trek verse, and some fun Indiana Jones stuff.

The season wraps up brilliantly with the California-class ships uniting to vanquish the Texas-class, and we get the addition of a new crew member as things wrap up! And, of course, there’s that post-credit tag.

Next time, season four gets underway.
