The Turkish horror film, Baskin, is bloody, surreal, and convoluted in the best way. The narrative folds in on itself like a twisted origami.
The story follows a group of cops including, Arda (Gorkem Kasal), and his boss, Remzi (Ergun Kuyucu). A troubling meal at restaurant is only the beginning for the squad, as they make rude comments and share ribald stories.
They are supposed to be answering call about a missing officer, but don’t seem to be in a real rush, and Remzi hints to Arda that this may not be what i appears to be, that there’s something else going on here.
When the squad arrives at the location, they find a building that was once stables, and also, once a police station. As they go into investigate, they seem to descend into a literal hell.
Shot beautifully with drenched night time colors, the film is incredibly and implies that we carry our own hell within us, and sometimes, it’s able to cross over into our world. And on this night, the squad is not ready for what they are about to face.

I love how the story weaves in on itself, and how unnerving it is. It’s well done, there are terrifying moments, and the practical and makeup effects are absolutely top-notch.
Having said that, this one isn’t going to be for everyone. The way the narrative works will probably jar and oust a number of viewers, but for those who stick it out, and are willing to dig into the story, and the layers at work here, you may find it pays off.
The Father (Mehmet Cerrahoglu) is a terrifying character, and Cerrahoglu brings it to life with a horrifying believability. The Father is calm, patient, and is in completee control, and there is nothing this police squad can do when it comes to he and his followers.
The film descends into some really graphic stuff, and when it hits, it hits hard. The things Arda and the rest see and experience are brutal, and the camera catches it all, putting us right in the middle of this surreal experience.
It’s a helluva ride, and as the film gets to its final moments, I knew where it was going, an I was right in the best way, and I loved seeing it play out.
There’s a lot going on in this one, and it may mean a second viewing may be in the offing, but man, I loved how digging into this one, and seeing how it played out. Man, this one can get under your skin.
