Smallville (2004) – Run, and Transference

Run introduces a familiar character of the DC universe to the Smallville mythos. Welcome Bart Allen (Kyle Gallner), this is Smallville’s incarnation of The Flash.

Written by Steven S. DeKnight and it debuted on 20 October, 2004.

Clark (Tom Welling) is in Metropolis with his dad, Johnathan (John Schneider). Jonathan is there for a checkup and a football game with Clark. Unfortunately, an accident, sees Clark discovering someone with speed like him, and Jonathan discovers his wallet gone.

So Allen isn’t a squeaky clean fella, yet. He and Clark have a long talk about who they both are, all without revealing Clark’s true heritage. Bart is getting by as a petty thief, using his speed force to accelerate and take what he needs.

Despite their differences, there’s a bit of a friendship developing there.

Bart also seems to crush a bit on Chloe (Allison Mack).

Lana (Kristin Kreuk) and Jason (Jensen Ackles) continue their relationship, and he discovers here back tattoo/brand. And she shows him the caves, and the iconography there.

Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) is attempting to repair the relationship between he and Clark, and shows him an old manuscript he’s acquired (one that has a map under it that Clark can see with his x-ray vision). Unfortunately, Bart steals it.

But his contact sells him back out to Lex. Happily, Clark is able to save the day. Will Bart be back? What does the manuscript mean for Clark? And will Lex reveal that he’s already discovered the map underneath the image, thanks to his computer research?

Oh and getting back to Jonathan, things are tough with him and Martha (Annette O’Toole) as the Talon seems to be taking up a lot of her time. But perhaps they can find a way to reconnect?

Transference first aired on 27 October, 2004. It was written by Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer, and brings in the old body swap trope into the Smallville universe.

For this version we see Lionel Luthor (John Glover) using one of the Kryptonian stones to effect that change. Lionel originally planned to use it to swap places with Lex, but Clark inadvertently gets swapped instead.

Lionel will learn all manner of Clark’s secrets, as well as others. Will he remember them when they swap back? And how can they swap back? Can he convince those who love Clark that he is Clark before Lionel takes over his life, and Lionel’s body dies with Clark’s consciousness.

Lionel as Clark gets out into the world, and Clark as Lionel is in prison. There Clark/Lionel learns that Lionel is dying, and that his cell mate, Edgar (J.P. Manoux) was able to help the research about the stones and what they mean and can do.

Bridgette Crosby (Margot Kidder) makes another appearance, after the stones and information that Edgar has.

And Lana and Jason investigate the symbol, the history of the countess that she was learning about, and the fact that these symbols seem to be popping up in all manner of ancient cultures.

It’s fun to see Welling and Glover taking on the personalities of established characters as they try to navigate these new circumstances and pretend to be someone else playing them.

How will Lionel move forward now that he’s back in prison? And how will Clark make amends with Chloe and Lana?
