In the spate of new shows that began this fall, two in particular caught my eye, simply because they both seemed to revolve around the world of fairytales. Having just written my very first of the genre, I was mildly interested to see what sort of new things would be brought to the old standbys…
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy – Review
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is an old school, cold-war spy thriller. And sadly, I think it’s not going to find as much of an audience as I would like it to here in North America. There’s not enough flash to hold the attention of the younger movie watchers who make up the large percentage of…
Prometheus Poster
Yes, I know, I know, I just did a post about how the art of the movie poster is dying, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some cool posters out there. Course, added to the fact that I really am getting amped for this movie maybe that’s why I think it looks cool… But I…
The Expendables 2
I’ll admit to having a week spot for big, loud action movies, but they can’t be completely plotless, or moronic, of which there is more than a fair share. Not to mention the big blockbuster rehashes that seem to be standard fare now. Sigh. But every now and then a mindless action movie comes along…
Michael J Fox
Michael J. Fox. His name is entwined inextricably with the 80s, and our hearts. He has also shown up a lot recently in my life, not the man himself, but his presence. I’ve been rewatching Family Ties, I’m working my way through season 2 even now, and loving every minute of it, and I’ve also…
An Evening with Michael Morpurgo, Author of War Horse
Michael Morpugo is the teacher that changes your life. If you were lucky enough to have him, then he was the type of teacher who left his indelible mark on you. We got to see some of that last night as we spent the evening with him and musician John Tams, who introduced and ended…
BBC’s Apparitions
I love it when I come across a show that I hav never heard of before, and it completely catches me off guard in how much I enjoy it. Admittedly that happens more with British television than North American television, because whether I’ve seen them or not, I’ve at least heard of most of the…
Episode 8 with April Mullen & Tim Doiron
Welcome to Episode 8, wherein Sue and I sit down and chat with our dear friends April Mullen and Tim Doiron, Canadian filmmakers who brought us Rock, Paper, Scissors: Way of the Tosser, and Gravy Train. We met up for at Fran’s on Yonge & College for breakfast and chat about favorite films, how they…
A Haven Christmas
“You think it’s Christmas too? It’s July.” “Yeah…?” Haven is my kind of Christmas episode. Anyone who knows me, or listened to our short podcast the other week, knows I’m not a huge fan of Christmas movies or shows in general, though Doctor Who, Charlie Brown, and the Muppets all tend to get passes, and…
