DK Canada’s The Movie Book rolls out the What Else to Watch list following my screening of Oldboy. Infernal Affairs is up for viewing, and served as the basis for the North American adaptation, The Departed. Yes, The Departed is a solid film, the original is so much better. Tightly edited, fantastically crafted the film…

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1999) – Strange Bedfellows, and The Changing Face of Evil
Station log: stardate unknown The Final Chapter of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine continues with the third episode of nine that will bring us to the series conclusion. Penned by Ronald D. Moore, it was directed by Rene Auberjonois and debuted on 12 April, 1999. Story threads continue to (un)spool? tie up? or set up…
Moonlighting (1986) – North by North DiPesto, and In God We Strongly Suspect
Debra Frank and Carl Sautter pen the first episode up this week, North by North DiPesto (a fun nod to one of my favorite Hitchcock films – and no doubt has a bit of an effect on the plot). It first aired on 21 January, 1986, and lets Agnes DiPesto (Allyce Beasley) take the limelight…
Star Trek: Voyager (1999) – The Disease, and Course: Oblivion
Captain’s log: stardate unknown Micheal Taylor pens this Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) episode from a story by Kenneth Biller. It first aired on 24 February, 1999. The Voyager comes across a race of aliens, the Varro, a group of space-faring nomads, that are more than a little xenophobic. They’ve been in space for four centuries,…
Bubba Ho-Tep (2002) – Don Coscarelli
Mummies! A fairly short chapter in DK Canada’s Monsters in the Movies book, this fun chapter is actually filled with films I have already reviewed for the blog, so I was delighted to be able to revisit a cult favorite that I hadn’t written up before. Ash, from the Evil Dead films may be Bruce…
Oldboy (2003) – Chan-wook Park
The intense South Korean thriller, Oldboy is the next movie recommendation from DK Canada’s highly enjoyable The Movie Book. Brutal, intense, and wow that reveal, this one floored me when I first saw it back in 2003, so I was eager to settle in and watch it again to see if it still had the…
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) – Bombad Jedi, Cloak of Darkness, and Lair of Grievous
“Heroes are made by the times” For the first time, we see Rodia depicted onscreen as Padme Amidala (Catherine Taber) is headed there on a diplomatic mission with Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels). The episode, Bombad Jedi, was written by Steven Melching, Henry Gilroy and and Kevin Rubio. It debuted on…
Paranormal Activity (2007) – Oren Peli
The Blair Witch Project may have made found footage horror movies mainstream, but it was Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity that brought it into our bedrooms. And this haunted house/possession story is the next stop in the ghost chapter of DK Canada’s Monsters in the Movies. There’s a lot of divisiveness about this movie, people either…
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1999) – Penumbra, and ‘Til Death Do Us Part
Station log: stardate 52576.2 Rene Echevarria pens this episode that first aired on 7 April, 1999, and begins one long serial arc that plays out through to the final episode. Ezri Dax (Nicole de Boer) disobeys Sisko’s (Avery Brooks) orders and goes after Worf (Micheal Dorn) when a ship the Klingon is currently serving on…
Moonlighting (1985/1986) – Twas the Episode Before Christmas, and The Bride of Tupperman
David (Bruce Willis) and Maddie (Cybill Shepherd) get into the holiday spirit this week with Twas the Episode Before Christmas. Written by showrunner and creator Glenn Gordon Caron, the xmas-themed episode aired on 17 December 1985. When a man in the witness protection program, Joseph (Ralph Meyering Jr.) is murdered by Leonard (Richard Belzer), his…
