The new Star Wars canon has turned on some stellar stuff (Lost Stars) and some less than entertaining stuff (Aftermath), but Paul S. Kemp’s action-packed novel falls very comfortably in the stellar category, bringing us a very satisfying tale, that ties a number of Star Wars properties together through references and characters. Taking place…

The Mind Reels chats with Carolyne Maraghi
Last night, Sue and I were fortunate enough to sit down and chat with Carolyne Maraghi thanks to the efforts of our friend, director, Jennifer Liao. Carolyne came in to chat about her role in Jennifer’s new film, the dark comedy with a supernatural bent, End of Days, Inc. now playing, through to Thursday (and…

Titan A.E. (2000) – Don Bluth
The next tale from the Sci-Fi Chronicles book that Joss Whedon had his hand in was this animated feature that featured the voice talents of Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore, Bill Pullman, Nathan Lane, Janeane Garofalo, John Leguizamo, and Tone Loc. Humanity is struggling to survive in a galaxy that has seen the destruction of…
Shane (1953) – George Stevens
“Shane. Shane! Come back! Bye, Shane.” It’s a classic line, but it’s from a film that I had never seen until now, thanks to the Great Movies – 100 Years of Film book recommending it following my screening of High Noon. Alan Ladd is the titular character, a weary gunfighter, looking to restart his…
Doctor Who (Tom Baker) – Shada
The infamous incomplete Douglas Adams story should have finished out Season 17. The six part story revolves around the lost planet of Shada, wherein a prison was built by the Time Lords to keep dangerous villains trapped. A former inmate, Skagra (Christopher Neame) is trying to locate the hidden planet, and possibly release all…
Alien: Resurrection(1997) – Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Next up in the Sci-Fi Chronicles book is Joss Whedon’s take on the Alien series, with the very divisive Alien: Resurrection. And while I, personally, despised the final act of the film, the xenomorph hybrid and all the hoopla that came with it, there are some redeeming things throughout. The stories of how Fox…
Magnum, p.i. (1986) – Who is Don Luis Higgins… and Why is He Doing These Terrible Things To Me? and A Little Bit of Luck… A Little Bit of Grief
Poor Higgins (John Hillerman) has his hands full in the first episode up this week, Who is Don Luis Higgins… and Why is He Doing These Terrible Things To Me? Written by Jay Huguely this one aired 20 March, 1986. With a chess tournament coming up on the islands, things should be looking up…
Star Trek: The Prometheus Design (1982) – Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath
Sigh. There are some books that just shouldn’t be read, or to be really proactive, shouldn’t be written. I don’t know who gave Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath the go-ahead on this one, but it’s obvious that they didn’t read the pair’s previous efforts when they wrote a couple of Trek books for Bantam. Set…
