Guns Akimbo (2019) – Jason Howden

Frenetic. Kinetic. and often hilarious, Guns Akimbo is an ultra-violent, gory action comedy starring Daniel Radcliffe and Samara Weaving.

Radcliffe, trotting out an American accent for the role, plays Miles. He professionally baits online trolls but when he finds an online fight club that has thousands of viewers across the web, he may have stumbled onto something he can’t take down.

Skizm arranges for competitors to hunt down each other across the city in a fight to death. When Miles discovers it, amidst attempts to rekindle his relationship with his ex, Nova (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), he comes to the attention of Skizm’s owner, Riktor (Ned Dennehy).

Rikotr not only kidnaps Nova to control Miles, but he literally bolts guns to Miles’ hands and sends him off to kill Nix (Weaving).

Nix has her own reasons for wanting to kill Miles, Riktor will clear her police record, but there’s more going on here.

There’s blood and violence as the pair clash and soon realize that the only way to really survive is go after Skizm and Riktor.

The camera never stops moving, and Radcliffe gives it his all with lots of great moments, hilarious narration, and lots of physical humor.

Under the story, there’s an actual commentary on the way society behaves behind its keyboards, and how the internet really does let the worst of people show. But that never gets in the way of a huge, bloody interactions.

There’s a ticking clock, there’s twists (not very surprising ones, but twists none the less), and great character beats. There’s also a great supporting cast including the wonderful Grant Bowler and Rhys Darby!

And despite supposedly being set in a North American city, the film is obviously shot in Australia. But that doesn’t detract any from the film. This one is just fun. It’s loud, has some great 80s covers, and really lets Radcliffe play.

Radcliffe shown that he’s willing to take chances in his roles, and this one is such wonderfully eccentric and joyous. It’s not going to be for everyone, but damn, did I enjoy myself.

And Weaving, well, she is definitely showing herself as one to watch.

This is one I would recommend to anyone looking for something a little different, a little loud, a lot bloody, very violent, and lots of laughs. Check this one out.

Y’know what? I may have to dive into some of Radcliffe’s other works. He’s talented, and takes on roles that require him to stretch himself.
