Smallville (2004) – Bound, and Scare

The episode Bound first debuted on 17 November, 2004. It was written by Luke Schelhaas.

There’s a lot of character stuff going on in this one as Lex (Michaeal Rosenbaum) finds himself caught up in a sex/murder scandal. He wakes up next to a murdered woman, Shannon (Cobie Smulders), whom he met the previous night.

Clark (Tom Welling), tries to help by getting Lionel (John Glover) to help his son. Lex has to be innocent right? So who set him up? And who murdered Shannon? Lionel has changed since he and Clark swapped. He’s no longer sick, his body has healed, and he wants to do good and perhaps do right by his son.

As the narrative progresses, we learn that there’s more than one girl and this may be an act of vengeance – a woman scorned. Lex’s sexual past has come back to wreak havoc on his life because of what he did and how he treated Shannon.

Will Clark be able to save his friend? But will Lex’s behaviour with women affect how Clark interacts with him?

And weirdness continues with Lana (Kristin Kreuk) when she meets Jason’s (Jensen Ackles) mother, Genevieve (Jane Seymour!!). It seems Lana recognizes her from the dreams she’s had about Isobel in the 1600s.

So what is going on with Genevieve? Has the whole thing with Jason been planned? She and Jason seem to have a strained relationship, and Lana refuses to be the go-between for them. Things are definitely being put into play for something big.

Scare debuted on 1 December, 2004. It was written by Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson.

An explosion rocks LuthorCorp, which releases a hallucinogenic bacteria, a side product of a fertilizer and causes the residents to suffer and relive their worst nightmares. The episode opens with a doozy involving Lana, Clark and Jason. It’s so bad that Jason, who was having the dream, tumbles over the banister at the Talon and is in some kind of coma.

Lex is on site and is trying to contain things, while keeping Clark and Chloe (Allison Mack) out. It’s some kind of military contract, but Lex is keen to shut it all down now, even though he also works to keep it quiet from the town and the CDC – not exactly the actions of an innocent man.

The episode, consequently, gets to play with some horror tropes and delivers some spooky moments as characters are confronted by their fears. The hallucinations seem incredibly real. As more and more people fall into comas, even Clark may not be immune.

Clark imagines the meteor shower that brought him to Earth, and Lex sees himself as president bringing destruction down on the planet with nuclear fire.

Can the cure be delivered in time before more succumb? LEex’s company has one, but it could be lethal. Clark is ready to take it.

And after his acceptance of being in prison, Lionel is now being prepared to be released from prison… Lionel wasn’t able to arrange that when he wanted out. So who has that kind of power? Lionel recignizes who it is upon his release, though we don’t see who it is.

And Jason? He and Lana seem to be getting ready to wrap up, he’s not happy now that he’s lost his job, and he didn’t like going to see Lex for help. But he’s holding something back… is it to do with his mother? He walks out on her as the episode gets ready to draw to a close.

And Chloe has found her mother, in a mental institution, and her illness is hereditary.

Everyone seems to have their fears, secrets and terrors, and it’s beginning to weigh on all of them.
