Smallville (2004) – Memoria, and Talisman

Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) is determined to get his missing memories back in Memoria. Written by show runners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, this episode debuted on 28 April, 2004.

We get lots of flashbacks, not just for Lex, but for Clark (Tom Welling) as well as their paths and friendship is explored. And we’re also left to wonder what Clark will do to keep Lex’s memories from coming back, because then he may be able to figure out Clark’s secret.

Clark is walking a fine line, he wants his friend to be ok, though suspicions and mistrust have definitely been seeping into their relationship over the course of the season. He warns Lex to stay way from Doctor Garner (Martin Cummins), especially after all the things the doctor has done, but Lex is determined to get his memories back. Even if it means undergoing experimental procedures.

John Glover is featured throughout the episode, Lionel struggles with Lex’s illness, and you can see he cares for his son, even if he can’t express it as well as he should, and we also learn why he’s conflicted over it. And we also see the truth about Lex’s baby brother. And Lionel also knows that whatever Lex is trying to remember, it involves Clark.

So Lionel attempts to blackmail Clark into undergoing the same process. And Garner has lots of kryptonite on hand. We see Clark’s departure from Krytpon.

And in a parallel to the series opener, Lex saves Clark from drowning, and rescues him this time. Though the Memory Well where both of them were being experimented on has been destroyed.

There are some solid performances in this piece.

Talisman is John Schneider’s directorial debut on the series. It first aired on 5 May, 2004 and was written by Kenneth Biller.

In the caves, a ceremonial Kawatche dagger has been unearthed. Lionel is eager to claim it but Jeremiah (Nathaniel Arcand), one of the research assistants takees it. And he becomes almost as powerful as Clark. He sees himself fulfilling the prophecy of Naman, the man who fell from the stars, who fights Sageeth.

Jeremiah sees himself as Naman, and Lionel as the villainous Sageeth. And that is going to lead to some super-powered combat – some of it good, some of it not.

Clark needs to find a way to stop Jeremiah. And save Lionel? There’s also more tension in the Clark/Lex relationship. They both know that they are keeping something from the other.

At school there seems to be something going on with Pete (Sam Jones III). Chloe (Allison Mack) learns what is going on with him, and it’s nice to see the pair have a momeent ttogeher.

Lana (Kristin Kreuk) is having problems, she got accepted to Paris, but didn’t get the financial aid she needs. Will Lex help her out?

And hey! There’s Teryl Rothery! She’s playing a real estate agent who is working on selling the Talon. Lex hired her, to buy Lana out so she can go to Paris. When Lana confronts him, there’s a new dynamic sinking into their relationship. So will she be going?

Lots of character stuff in this one. You can feel we’re building up to something, and that must be because next time, we finish off season three.
