Smallville (2004) – Resurrection, and Crisis

While Jonathan (John Schneider) prepares for open-heart surgery, one of Clark’s (Tom Welling) friends, Garrett (James Kirk) loses his brother, Vince (Tahmoh Penikett) before he can get a much needed liver replacement.

But he’s not gone.

Resurrection was written by Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer and first aired on 25 February, 2004.

Dr. Teng (Francoise Yip) has gottten hold of Vince’s body for her experiments into the blood platelets for Lionel Luthor (John Glover). Once he’s revived, things go from bad to worse.

He still needs a liver transplant, and when he collapses again, Garrett takes things to a dangerous edge by demanding the transplant, and he’s going to use a kryptonite-infused bomb strapped to his body for leverage.

Clark gets pulled in to try and stop things, but we also check in with Chloe (Allison Mack) and Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) who are trying to track down Teng.

As an aside, I know the hospital ha featured in a number of episodes before this, and I haven’t mentioned it. But man, the colour scheme for the hospital is horrible. It does not feel like a Kansas hospital. If it didn’t have hospital equipment in it, I would say it was probably a bit of an office set up.

Lana (Kristin Kreuk) has a bit of a check-on, but kind of moves in and out of the story, to tie in the Vince narrative with Adam’s (Ian Somerhalder) narrative for Clark. Something the viewer already knew.

And while Clark attempts to deal with Garrett, Lana, Pete (Sam Jones III) and Martha (Annette O’Toole) worry over Jonathan’s surgery, and are among the hostages being held in the hospital. Clark is able to get his hands on the platelet cure, but will it be enough to save Vince?

Will Garrett burn all his bridges to save his brother? You bet. Will Jonathan’s life be at risk, while he’s on the table? You know it. Because Garrett decides any liver will do the job.

Clark saves the day, happily. And it could have gone a lot worse.

And what is in the platelet serum? Some of Clark’s blood… That’s what Adam and Vince have been injected with, and that leaves Clark wondering what else he could do to help. And it’s one more secret he’s keeping.

And hey look! There’s Bruce Harwood from The X-Files as a helicopter pilot!

Crisis sees Clark joining Pete at his work on a Teen Crisis Hotline. And he receives a call from Lana asking for his help. She’s being chased in the rain by someone with a gun! And we see her get shot! But when Clark races to the Talon (and it’s not raining) Lana is there and is fine.

So what’s going on?

Written by Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson this episode first aired on 3 March, 2004.

When Chloe, Clark and Lana get a hold of a recording of the call they are able to hear another voice on the recording, they hear Adam, and a radio broadcast – which lets them know when the event is taking place, because of a baseball game.

It’s going to happen tonight!

Meanwhile, Lex confronts Lionel about the platelet serum. He doesn’t want thee project shut down, he wants to run it. And it is that move that sends Adam on a path of vengeance, and Clark may be the only one able to stop him, and save Lana.

How did the phone call back in time? And once again, we see the possibility of Clark altering destiny, at least where Lana seems to be concerned.

And with all the crap Lionel has thrown at Lex over control of the project and getting rid of Adam and Teng… Lex is willing to offer up his father to the FBI…

Meanwhile, Lionel is carrying on with the project in secret, for his own use.
