The Day the Earth Blew Up (2024) – Peter Browngardt

I’m not sure what is going on with Warner Brothers, making a number of movies, completing them, then canceling their release only to use them as tax write-offs. We can only hope some day we’ll see the release of Batgirl, but happily, Ketchup Entertainment picked up Coyote vs. Acme and The Day the Earth Blew Up.

And filled with wonderful animation that seems to be the best combination of today’s style and storytelling, as well as that as yesteryear, The Day the Earth Blew Up is an entertaining hoot from start to finish. It honors classic Looney Tunes, and is filled with nods to them, and tells a fun and modern story in a fun way.

Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, both voiced by Eric Bauza, are best friends. They’ve grown up together, and share a house, that, after a strange object plowed through their roof, is in danger of being condemned and torn down.

So they’ll need to get jobs. Enter a romantic love interest for Porky in the form of fellow employee, Petunia Pig (Candi Milo).

Daffy, more in line with his original character design than with his later self-involved style, is wacky, and follows a trail of goo similar to the goo on the hole in their home.

And oh dear, it seems there’s a dastardly alien plan to take over the planet through a goo-infested gum!

It’s up to the trio to stop it!

Engage the wackiness with tons of sight gags, great lines, and outstanding animation.

The character designs are wonderfully inline with the established Warner Brothers look, and the story is suitably wacky. And honestly, I laughed aloud a number of times. The script is sharp and entertaining, and is able to walk the line between silly and smart.

And that means it can work for both kids and adults. This, to me, is a classic Warner Brothers cartoon, it works for everyone.

Warner made a huge mistake not releasing this thing theatrically themselves. I can’t believe they were going to shelve it! Happily Ketchup saved the day, and now we can enjoy this hilarious cartoon escapade.

It works. It works so well. I had heard good things about it, so I was eager to see how much I enjoyed it. And I’m happy to report that it’s just so much fun.

The animation is sharp, the pacing and editing are tight. The film uses its whole ninety minute run to tell one cohesive story, but with lots of fun little side gags and jokes. Daffy and Porky are a wonderful pairing, and it’s great to see them in the limelight, and Bauza’s vocal performance is solid, he brings those characters to life with that Mel Blanc magic.

Loved it!
