I love Twister. Unabashedly. Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Cary Elwes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, some fun tunes, some solid (mostly) effects (cow!) and some great pacing and set pieces. So I was both excited and nervous when Twisters was announced.
There’s some nice nods to the original film, and there’s some pretty easy character set-up. You know one of the characters has to have an issue with getting back into storm-chasing. Enter Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate.
Kate is a genius, and has a plan for ‘taming’ tornadoes, but when an attempt goes horribly wrong and costs the lives of almost all of her team, she walks away.
Five years later, she’s contact by Javi (Anthony Ramos), the other surviving member of her team. He has a plan to get a 3D scan of a tornado, and perhaps they can figure out all the ways the they form, and all the environmental requirements for one to form. His financiers are eager to get Kate aboard.
She gives them a week.
Storm-chasing has changed a bit since the 90s, there are fans, there are tourist, and there’s even a group of YouTubers led by Tyler (Glen Powell) who seems like not much more than a hillbilly with a camera, but there’s a couple of deceiving appearances throughout the film .

There’s a fun connection with Kate and Tyler, and you want to see them together, working and possibly romantically. There’s a lot of fun banter between them.
They chase tornadoes across Oklahoma, Tyler for kicks (apparently) and Javi and Kate, for science? or for money?
There’s some really solid sequences and you can see that the visual effects have grown since the first film (which I still love) and makes for some great set-pieces. Throw in a Grammy-nominated soundtrack and you can buckle up for a fun ride.
Much like the first film it’s pretty much a popcorn film, fun, predictable, and best watched loud.
Powell is damned likable. In fact the whole cast is. Edgar-Jones is charming, and I couldn’t help but notice that her costume definitely had nods to Helen Hunt’s. And like the first film, this one included a lot of actors that are going places; look, there’s David Corenswet who has donned the Superman cape, Kiernan Shipka makes an appearance, and Maura Tierney shows up. And that’s just at first blush.
It’s fun, it’s goofy, and it’s a great popcorn movie. It won’t displace the first film and its my enjoyment of it, but I do like the idea of pairing the two together, and honestly, Powell, Edgar-Jones and Ramos are all fantastic to watch.
If you feel it, chase it! And I will. This one will be revisited on the regular I think.
