Avatar: The Last Airbender – Book 3: Fire (2007/2008) – The Day of the Black Sun, The Day of the Black Sun, Part 2: The Eclipse, and The Western Air Temple

The Day of the Black Sun parts one and two aired as one big episode on 30 November, 2007. The first part, was written by one of the series creators, Micheal Dante DiMartino, while the second part, The Eclipse was written by Aaron Ehasz.

Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen) and the gang get ready to take on the Fire Nation, and Sokka (Jack De Sena), Toph (Micheala Jill Murphy) and Katara (Mae Whitman) are delighted when the rest of their forces arrive. Led by Katara and Sokka’s father, Hakoda (Andre Sogliuzzo) an invasion force arrives filled with characters and allies from the first two seasons, even Appa (Dee Bradley Baker) gets a new armoured outfit.

The plan is to attack the Fire Nation in the middle of a solar eclipse, when their firebending powers are at their weakest. Aang is still unable to unlock his Avatar state after his chakra was locked by Azula (Grey Griffin), but the team is determined to carry out this action, and Aang believes he is ready to take on the Fire Lord (Mark Hamill). Aang shares a quick impulsive kiss with Katara and sets off to face his destiny.

With some help from the Mechanist (Rene Auberjonois) the team is able to sneak into enemy territory, and the assault begins. The action is big, the stakes are high, and the cost will be great.

Iroh (Greg Baldwin) is still in prison, but he’s about ready to put his escape plan into action, and Zuko (Dante Basco) is getting ready to take action of his own.

Aang arrives in the palace to confront the Fire Lord, and he’s troubled to find the entire palace and surrounding town, empty.

Is the Fire Nation ready for them? Azula knew they were coming and has prepared the entire nation for them.

Azula is waiting for Aang in the Fire Lord’s chambers and distracts Sokka with what may have happened to Suki. At the same time, Zuko has gone to confront his father, revealing he plans to join the avatar and is taunted by the fate of his mother. When Zuko flees to the prison to free his uncle, he finds that Iroh is already gone!

The eclipse passes with Aang unable to get to the Fire Lord, so the group has to retreat, reorganize and plan all over again. But will they all be able to escape? The parents, and older characters elect to stay and fight to protect the rest of the groups escape, and Aang is heartbroken as he feel he has failed again.

Aang leads his team to the Western Air Temple, followed by Zuko…

With everything that happened in this episode, viewers were ready to see how the end of the story played out. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t find out until July of 2008!

The Western Air Temple aired 7 1/2 months later!! First broadcast on 15 July, 2008, this episode was written by Elizabeth Welch Ehasz and Tim Hedrick.

The group hides out at the Western Air Temple to plan their next move, and hopefully regain their morale. When Zuko arrives the group has to figure out whether or not they can trust him or not. And if they accept him, that may solve the problem of finding a fire-bending master to teach him.

Aang is reverting to a bit of child-like behaviour, refusing to face his responsibilities. The team have to support him, and get him back on track, and will Zuko be the key to that?

Problems keep coming, however, with the arrival of Combustion Man! Can they defeat the threat once and for all, and will Zuko be able to prove his intentions to the group?

We’re racing towards the conclusion of the series. How are things going to play out? How will Team Avatar confront the Fire Nation before the comet arrives. Let’s see where the adventure takes us as I continue to explore Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Complete Series on Blu-ray, available now from Paramount Canada.
