Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 4 Blu-Ray

The U.S.S. Cerritos returns to the screen with Paramount Canada’s release of Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 4 on Blu-ray. Filled with great stories, deep cuts of Trek trivia, and lots of laughs as well as answering the decades-old question, does Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) look like Nick Locarno? There are promotions, roommates, and lots of Voyager stuff this time around.

Over the course of two discs and ten episodes, we join Boimler (Jack McQuaid), Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Rutherford (Eugene Cordero),Tendi (Noel Wells) and the new Vulcan lower decker, T’Lyn (Gabrielle Ruiz) as they boldly go where no one as gone before, encountering new and familiar characters and aliens, all of which tie into a season arc which leads the crew to a shocking discovery!

It’s really something how a show that celebrates the love of all things Trek, and slips in so many easter eggs, which is set in the same universe as all of the Trek television shows, can be so funny. Trek can really vibe in animation, and it shows how fun the franchise can be, while still telling classic Star Trek stories.

And of course, there are the extras which take us behind the scenes of the series. There’s a quick behind-the-scenes look at the season with creator and showrunner, Mike McMahan. There’s also a half-hour doc about the run of the season, the mystery that permeates the season, the little character beats that shape the characters, and the way this season calls in a number of familiar old friends, and how they affect the story and the characters.

The extras also include five commentaries on select episodes. Featured on the commentaries are Jack McQuaid, Mike McMahan, co-producer Brad Winters, Tawny Newsome, Noel Wells, Gabrielle Ruiz, Chase Masterson, Dawnn Lewis and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is funny, smart and celebrates everything we love about the franchise. I had hoped for a longer run for the series, but last week, they made the announcement that the fifth season, which starts later this year, will be its final one – I was hoping that we’d get at least six, so that the series could continue delivering their version of iconic Trek movie posters.

But as Spock says, there are always possibilities, so perhaps we’ll see them again.

Still, this and each season before, has been fun, intelligent, and filled with all those little nods to the franchise and moments within it, that we love. Star Trek: Lower Decks: Season 4 is available today on Blu-ray and DVD from Paramount Canada.

Boldly go.
