Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham, collectively known as James S.A. Corey the author of The Expanse book series pen IFF, which stands for Identify Friend or Foe, debuted on 18 April, 2018.
While Mao (Francois Chao) arrives on Io to confer with his science team over the protomolecule and human hybrids they are creating as weapons, it’s revealed that they may have cracked a way to control the molecule’s behaviour on its subjects; the children of Ganymede, including Prax’s (Terry Chen) daughter Mei (Leah Madison Jung), all have a genetic defect, and that could be the key.
Meanwhile, Sadavir (Shawn Doyle) is troubled by and clashes with, a new arrival at the U.N. to help Secretary-General Gillis (Jonathan Whittaker) in dealing with the public face of the growing system-wide conflict, Reverend Doctor Anna Volovodov (Elizabeth Mitchell!). She has worked with Gillis in the past as a speechwriter and he calls on her now to help.
The Rocinante continues its burn to Io, but when Draper (Frankie Adams) dispatches an SOS for her and Chrisjen (Shohreh Aghdashloo) from the Razorback, Holden (Steven Strait), Amos (Wes Chatham), Naomi (Dominique Tipper), Alex (Cas Anvar) and Prax have to decide whether or not to lend aid, sacrificing valuable time for Mei.
What follows is an amazingly constructed chase sequence and the dangers of not being strapped down during high-gee maneuvers.
Finally, Draper, Chrisjen, and the crew of the Roci are all in the same place, after three seasons! The series is very much its own creature separate from the novels, but taking its inspiration from it, continues to rock!
Assured Destruction was written by Dan Nowak and was first broadcast on 25 April, 2018. While Chrisjen and the crew of the Rocinante argue over their next move, going to Io or getting her back to Earth with her evidence to prove Sadavir is the one working with Mao, and not her as he would have everyone believe.
On Earth, Sadavir continues to push the Scretary General into all-out war, while Volovodov works to maintain the peace.
The truly interesting story happens on Io, as Mao sees the fruits of his science team’s labour and their work with the protomolecule on the Ganymede children; Project: Calliban. Unfortunately, he’s beginning to form a bit of an attachment to Mei and he begins to reconsider this course of action.
Through it all, we are constantly reminded of the Eros impact site on Venus, and that something is still happening to the expedition ship that went to investigate it.
I love the fact that Bobbie, Chrisjen and the Roci crew have their first real interactions with one another in this episode, and there is some series static between them. I love the clash between Amos and Bobbie, and how Alex attempts to smooth things over with her by reminding everyone of his service in the Navy.
We are ramping up to big things, and Holden and his crew are going to be caught up in all of them.
