Paramount Pictures in association with Showtime is unleashing the Complete Series of the British Sky TV programme Penny Dreadful today. This danse macabre is by turns frightening, poignant, and completely unnerving. And it has never looked better. Featuring a gorgeous high definition transfer, the series looks and sounds fantastic as it takes the viewer deeper into the darkness of not only the supernatural but of the human soul.
The term, Penny Dreadful originated in the Victorian era and was used to describe a form of literature that told dark, splashy and often bloody tales much like the pulp fiction of the United States in the 20th century. Using that concept as a launching point, the series marries famous literary characters into a tale of sex, horror, blood and violence which lives up to the name of its title, and the types of lurid, sensational and bloody tales they would contain.
Victorian London is the backdrop as a cadre of characters unite to take on the supernatural and their own personal demons (both physical and emotional) in this sharply crafted series from John Logan.
Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) is an explorer who is joined by American gunslinger Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), medium Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadway) as they work to stop supernatural threats.
The cast of characters, Murray, Chandler, Victor and Ives soon find themselves encountering famous literary characters, including Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), Frankenstein’s monster (Rory Kinnear), as well as characters from Stoker’s Dracula (in addition to making sly references to classic horror films), as they are woven into the arc of the series.
All 27 episodes, spanning the three series of the show are here on nine discs that are loaded with special features. There are glimpses behind the scenes of the production, interviews, short documentaries on penny dreadfuls as well as the show’s literary roots.
Featuring cinematic imagery, dark, engaging, and sometimes frightening storylines, as well as classic and cult favourite actors like David Warner and Billie Piper.
Penny Dreadful is a dark horror story for adults, strongly cast and written. The series invites us into the lives of characters that have been reinvented countless times, but with the addition of Chandler, Vanessa and Sir Malcolm, it gives a new, enjoyable twist on tales we think we know. We delve into the work of Frankenstein, creepy dolls, and get a nice spin on witches as the Nightcomers attack out heroes on their Satanic quest.
As the story progresses, the series takes the time to fill out backstories for each of its leads, investing the viewer in their lives and the horrific events they find themselves involved in.
Like most television nowadays, this series is best watched on a binge, and with this new collection from Paramount, there is no better way to do it. Get your fill of story, blood, and terrors in this slim little collection.
