What Season 1 is over already?!?!
That’s ok, it ends in a great way, the lovely Erin Gray stars in the first episode as the titular, J. ‘Digger’ Doyle. It also features Orson Welles as the voice of Robin Masters… This episode was written by Bellisario and aired on 9 April, 1981. In it, Magnum (Tom Selleck) falls for Doyle, who actually uses him to get into the estate to prove she can, it seems she works for a security company hired by Masters.
This company was hired because it seems someone is after the tapes, which are the only record, later to be transcribed, of Robin’s new book. While Robin travels the world in his jet, Digger, Magnum, Higgins (John Hillerman), T.C. (Roger E. Mosley) and Rick (Larry Manetti) prepare for his potential arrival.
Unfortunately, Higgins gets caught and held by the baddies, and Digger and Magnum have to trust one another as they break in to rescue him.
The only real issue I had with this episode was the fact that Digger sneezes at one point, and the villains heard her… on a closed-circuit camera that certainly didn’t look like it had an audio recording devices on it.
On the flipside, the episode did have Erin Gray! And that makes up for a lot, well that and the fact that there are a lot of nice moments in this episode, like Higgins’ rescue through which, because he’s drugged, he won’t shut up. There’s also a great sequence featuring banter with Thomas and T.C. in which the helicopter pilot is sure he’ll be shot at during the course of the case…
The second episode Beauty Knows No Pain, aired 16 April, 1981, and was written by Robert Hamilton.
While T.C. is trying to convince Thomas to participate in the Iron Man Marathon, the private investigator gets hired by Barbara ‘Babs” Terranova (Marcia Wallace) for 24 hours (all she can afford) to find her fiancée. Her fiancée Roger (Jim Weston), it seems is being hunted by both the Feds and the mob for a bundle of money he’s been hiding until the statute of limitations runs out on the theft. The mob wants it back, the Feds want him to turn it over and give him a reward, and he thinks he may just want to keep it, though he’s not really a thief.
As they prowl the pool halls of the island, as well as possible places of employment, Thomas slowly gets sucked into actually entering the marathon, and Babs appoints herself his head coach.
A lot of this episode is made for laughs, and it’s a great way to close out the season, as after the first year, this one must have already been a ratings winner. It was just so fun!!
Now that my computer is working again, and I can access things, I think I have to leave Magnum for a few weeks, and go back to Airwolf and see what happens in Season 2… I think maybe I’ll just look at it as saving the best for last, which is definitely true as my favorite Bellisario series is yet to come!!!
