A good fish-out-of-water story is always fun, but even more so when it’s a robot or an alien or anything else trying to learn how to be human. It pokes fun at us without malice, and allows us to see how silly we are as a species – through the eyes of non-humans, at least.
Number 5 is an experimental robot with artificial intelligence who goes on the lam and tries to make his way in the real world, all while being pursued by the military who enlisted his creation. The film examines the nature of what it means to be alive, and why some lives are deemed more valuable than others. It may be somewhat ridiculous at times, but it has a lot of heart, and Ally Sheedy is super cute, to boot.
