What Greg (and Kelly) said about the series being “its own animal” and a separate entity from the books is a really helpful and healthy way to look at adaptations in general. Books, plays, film and TV are so different in terms of style and focus – expecting a dead-on adaptation from one to another is a bit unrealistic. Film and TV, given their time limitations, cannot cover every detail of a novel. When the spirit of the story and the characters transfer over, that’s enough. Adaptation as variation.
