Magnum P.I. (2020) – Say Hello to Your Past, and Farewell to Love

Kumu (Amy Hill) is kidnapped by an injured man, Milo (Dohn Norwood), who is on the run from HPD because he’s accused of killing his wife, something he insists to Kumu that he didn’t do.

Say Hello to Your Past was written by Joe Gazzam and was first broadcast on 10 April, 2020.

While Magnum (Jay Hernandez), Higgins (Perdita Weeks), T.C. (Stephen Hill), Rick (Zachary Knighton), Katsumoto (Tim Kang) and the Honolulu Police Department search for her and Milo, Kumu gets to know him, and realize the man is guilty of a number of crimes, but he didn’t kill his wife. Maybe Magnum and Higgins can help discover the truth, and prove his innocence.

Unfortunately, if they are going to help, they have to keep Kumu and Milo safe from Katsumoto while they conduct their investigation. Everything happens fast, and Magnum and Higgins know they are risking their restored friendship with Katsumoto, but Kumu believes in Milo, so the game is on.

Course, Katsumoto is smarter than they give him credit for, and catches up to everyone, and must decide what to do.

But at the episode’s heart is Amy Hill’s Kumu, and once again, the series layers out the characters and gives them some nice depth, even as the episode is drenched in sun-soaked melodrama. The episode has some great banter between Higgins and Magnum as they have to share a horse and argue over whether or not Magnum can use the new car.

It’s fun, and Kumu’s story has a nice emotional arc to it.

Farewell to Love was written by Ashley Charbonnet and Alfredo Barrios Jr. It first aired on 17 April, 2020.

Magnum and Higgins are posing as a romantic couple on a bus tour of the island, taking in all the romantic spots. They’ve been hired to keep an eye on another couple, in hopes of getting evidence of a romantic liaison. But things escalate when there is a murder on the tour, and someone wants to make sure the group doesn’t get out without a problem.

There are some nice character moments with the pair as we learn Higgins’ preferences when it comes to dating and being asked out.

Rick calls T.C. to La Mariana because Rick thinks he’s spotted T.C.’s ex, Teresa (Meagan Holder) who is apparently visiting the island on her honeymoon. How is he going to deal with that? Especially when she shows up to chat with him, and perhaps offer the pair some closure.

There’s a lot of discussion about romance, dating and love in this episode, and it plays fairly well. I like seeing T.C.’s character getting a little more attention. I love the way they’ve developed the characters for this iteration of the series and I’m really beginning to enjoy this take on the iconic characters, though it will never eclipse my love of the original.

There’s more fun in the sun this week as I explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
