This week’s Book Shelf brings me to the movie adaptation of Star Trek IV, as I continue to enjoy, discover new stories and revisit old ones with the Pocket Book novels. Working from the film’s original script, McIntyre expands on the film’s story, as well as tying it more strongly into her own stories and…

Star Trek: The Next Generation (1989) – Contagion, and The Royale
Captain’s log: stardate 42609.1 Airing on 27 March, 1989, Contagion is a fairly solid story written by Steve Gerber and Beth Woods. In response to a distress call from their sister ship, the U.S.S. Yamato, Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) orders the Enterprise to violate the Romulan Neutral Zone. Racing towards the ship, the Enterprise downloads…
Star Trek: Enterprise – The First Adventure (1986) – Vonda N. McIntyre
Long before the 2009 reboot author Vonda N. McIntyre penned this non-canon telling of the first adventure of Captain Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Scott Sulu and Chekov as they are united for the first time aboard the Enterprise. James Kirk has just been given command of the Federation flagship, and is looking forward to a…
Star Trek: Demons (1986) – J.M. Dillard
It’s time to dive into more non-canon Star Trek, as this week the crew of the starship Enterprise find themselves in the Trek version of a horror film. Now, don’t let the cover art fool you, this adventure doesn’t take place around the Star Trek II & II timeline. The book was released in 1986,…
The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years (2016) – Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman
As I have moved on to viewing Star Trek: The Next Generation for the blog, I thought it was high time to dive into the second volume of The Fifty Year Mission by Trek fans Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross. The first volume, as previously reviewed chronicled the the Original Series, the features, and…
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1988) – When the Bough Breaks and Home Soil
Captain’s log: stardate 41509.1 This duo of episodes is a tough one, it’s like they decided to put the worst two episodes together to make it that much harder to get through. When the Bough Breaks was written by Hannah Louise Shearer this episode first screened for audiences on 15 February, 1988. On the upside…
Star Trek: Dreadnought! (1986) – Diane Carey
When I was younger, living in Bermuda, back in 1986, I would hit the rather meagre offerings in the book racks of the American Exchange store which served Canadian, British and American forces as our mult-need department store. I would grab each Trek book I came across, and would tear through them, devouring the adventures…
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) – Lonely Among Us, and Justice
Captain’s log: stardate 41249.3 Lonely Among Us is another mixed bag episode that shows the series is still trying to find its feet. Written by D.C. Fontana from a story by Michael Halperin, this episode first aired on 2 November, 1987. The Enterprise is ferrying delegations (necessitating the introduction of the new dress uniform) to…
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) – The Last Outpost, and Where No One Has Gone Before
Captain’s log: stardate 41386.4 The introduction of the Ferengi. Well that could have gone better. The script was penned by Herbert Wright from a story by Richard Krezmien and the episode first aired on 19 October, 1987. The Enterprsie is in pursuit of a Ferengi Marauder accused of theft, when both ships find themselves losing…
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) – The Naked Now and Code of Honor
Captain’s log: stardate 41209.2 The Naked Now was written by D.C. Fontana and John D.F. Black. It originally aired on 5 October, 1987. I’m divided on this episode, and since its early days for the series, I’m willing to give it a lot of leeway. But I honestly think they should have waited until a…
