Star Trek: Picard – Last Best Hope (2020) – Una McCormack
It has been a while since I slipped into a Star Trek novel. I’m still back on The Original Series, and the last one I read was 1995’s The Ashes of Eden, the first novel that introduced the Shatner-Verse version of Trek novels. But I was eager to see how the newer novels tied in…
Star Trek: The Fearful Summons (1995) – Denny Martin Flinn
Space, the final frontier… I take up the journey with Kirk and company again this week, and was delighted in how most of The Fearful Summons read. It’s a fast read, and has the pacing of a screenplay, and even reading it, you can tell what things would be edited out of the film, or…
Star Trek: The Better Man (1995) – Howard Weinstein
Space, the final frontier… Don’t be fooled by the cover art, this story takes place a couple of years after the events of The Motion Picture, and apparently the burgundy uniform jackets are in place. The story itself, however, if entertaining, well-crafted, and very much a true Trek tale, and it puts Dr. McCoy front…
Star Trek: Federation (1994) – Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens
This week’s journey where no one has gone before is an epic novel that combines adventures with the crew of James T. Kirk’s Enterprise, with those of Jean-Luc Picard’s tying it in with the life of Zefram Cochrane, and the efforts of one of Colonel Green’s cadre, Colonel Thorsen. With a wrap-around story that takes…
Star Trek: The Patrian Transgression (1994) – Simon Hawke
Space, the final frontier… It’s time to continue my travels with the stalwart crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise as I join them on their original five year missions to seek out new life, and new civilisations. This time, author Simon Hawke delivers a story that fits well into the style of The Original Series with…
Star Trek: The Starship Trap (1993) – Mel Gilden
Set during the original five year mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise, Mel Gilden’s Trek novel is one I really enjoyed. He totally has the characters down, and not only could I hear the characters in my head, I could see everything in my mind’s eye playing out like an episode. Captain Kirk is less than…
Star Trek: Short Treks (2018/2019) – Runaway, Calypso, The Brightest Star, and The Escape Artist
Captain’s log: 2257 I take on the first season of Short Treks this week which aired between the first and second season of Star Trek: Discovery, Featuring shorter tales, some that will have a direct effect on future episodes and events. The first episode, Runaway, lets Tilly (Mary Wiseman) have a bit of a moment…
Star Trek: Discovery (2018) – Will You Take My Hand?
Captain’s log: 2257 Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts write the teleplay for the first season finale of Star Trek: Discovery from a story by Berg, Harberts and Akiva Goldsman, who also directs. It first aired on 11 February, 2018, and ended with a moment that excited some fans, and infuriated others. With Georgiou (Michelle…
Star Trek: Discovery (2018) – The Wolf Inside, and Vaulting Ambition
Captain’s log: 2257 Lisa Randolph continues the Discovery Mirror Universe arc with The Wolf Inside which first aired on 14 January, 2018. Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is in charge of the I.S.S. Shenzou and is ordered to destroy some rebels for the Terran Empire, but she works to do her best to save them all while…
