Sue and I were completely enthralled and taken in by our experience at the Burlington Toy Convention that we attended in March. We both love toys, and geek out over a lot of similar things, so we knew going in that we were going to have a lot of fun. But we honestly had no…
Picture Day – Kate Melville
This film first caught my attention last year at TIFF, but though it was on my “To See” list at the time, it ultimately didn’t work out schedule-wise, and I ended up having to leave it behind. Until now. The moment I heard that First Weekend Club would be screening Picture Day at the…
Five Fingers of Death aka King Boxer (1972) – Chang-hwa Jeoong
The 101 Action Movies brings another Shaw Brothers classic to my screen. It’s a fairly generic tale, yet for all that, it’s a lot of fun, and the fight sequences are exciting. There are glowing red hands indicating the power of the Iron Fist, there are eyeballs ripped from sockets with a music cue that…
Star Wars: Episode VI – The Return of the Jedi (1983) – Richard Marquand
This, of course, is yet another one of those movies that stays with me, I can remember where I was when I saw it, who I saw it with, and all the excitement that sprung up around it, filling my young life with, to that point, unparalleled excitement! George Lucas’ original trilogy comes to an end…
Le Dernier Combat (1983) – Luc Besson
I tend to like Luc Besson’s films, Leon, The Fifth Element, La Femme Nikita… and of course he’s written and created tons of other things I’ve enjoyed as well, so I was very happy to take a look at this entry into the 101 Sci-Fi Movies list. The world seems to be a desolate…
The Rep (2012) – Morgan White
The communal experience of movie-going, of settling in to watch an old favorite on the big screen where it belongs, with other people who love it as much as you, and people who are being introduced to it for the first time. I own my favorite movie, Jaws (in case you haven’t been following the…
Defiance S01E06 – Brothers In Arms
Rockne O’Bannon penned the script for this week’s Defiance and I love how he opened up the world a little more and it seems that everyone in this town has a secret or two. I’ve been intrigued with the world of Defiance since its first episode, I’ve loved the writing, the characters and the…
Member Panda Preview at the Toronto Zoo
From the moment the two giant pandas – Er Shun and Da Mao – landed safe and sound to spend the next five years at the Toronto Zoo, Tim and I knew we’d be attending any kind of member preview being held for the pair. In part so that we could see them with…
Videodrome (1983) – David Cronenberg
The crew includes special effects by wizard Rick Baker, and music by Howard Shore. The cast includes James Woods, Sonja Smits and a scintillating performance by Deborah Harry. Add in Cronenberg’s love of flesh horror and you have the makings of this cult favorite on the 101 Sci-Fi Movies list. Max Renn (Woods) is a…
Orphan Black S01E08 – Entangled Bank
The circles Sarah (Tatiana Maslany) as well as her clones Kasima and Allison seem to be resembling nooses as the first season of this amazing show rockets towards its finale, only two episodes left after this! Art (Kevin Hanchard) and Angela (Inga Cadranel) learn that the Jane Does they’ve been investigating are dead ringers for…
