Conan the Destroyer (1984) – Richard Fleischer
Three years after Conan the Barbarian hit the screens, Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to the role in the follow-up, Conan the Destroyer. The next stop in the list of evil wizards in the chapter on Devil’s Work in DK Canada’s very enjoyable, Monsters in the Movies. Unfortunately due to some unnecessary comedic elements, and a truly…
Conan the Barbarian (1982) – John Milius
DK Canada’s highly enjoyable Monsters in the Movies brings me another classic film for my viewing pleasure. This one, I’ve wanted to rewatch for awhile, but couldn’t find the time. Happily, it showed up in the chapter, Devil’s Work, under evil wizards. Arnold Schwarzenegger brings Robert E. Howard’s iconic creation, Conan the Barbarian to life…
Star Wars: Rebels (2016) – Homecoming, The Honorable Ones, and Shroud of Darkness
Hera (Vanessa Marshall) heads back to her home world of Ryloth with the Ghost crew in Homecoming. Steven Melching penned this episode which first debuted on 17 February, 2016. Arriving home leads to the inevitable confrontation with Hera’s father, Cham Syndulla (Robin Atkin Downes) who was first introduced in The Clone Wars. We also catch…
Spy Game (2001) – Tony Scott
This week’s spy thriller is a fantastic film from Tony Scott and starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. I remember being blown away the first time I saw this one, though I’ve always been a fan of Scott’s work, and the score by Harry Gregson-Williams felt perfectly suited for a techno-thriller, though admittedly this is…
Star Trek: Discovery (2019) – Perpetual Infinity, and Through the Valley of Shadows
Captain’s log: 2257 We’re racing to the conclusion of the second season now. Perpetual Infinity written by Alan McElroy and Brandon Schultz, which first aired on 28 March, 2019, is making sure there are lots of cards on the table to make sure we realise what the game really is. As Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) deals…
Chuck (2010) – Versus the Fake Name, and Versus the Beard
Chuck (Zachary Levi) just can’t get a break. In Chuck Versus the Fake Name, written by Ali Adler, and having an original airdate of 1 March, 2010, Chuck has plans to make dinner (chicken pepperoni) for Hannah (Kristin Kreuk), Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and Awesome (Ryan McPartlin) but things get sidelined when he has to pose…
Octopussy and The Living Daylights (1966) – Ian Fleming
Ian Fleming’s final James Bond book, the second published posthumously and the fourteenth 007 book overall is a collection of previously published quartet of short stories. And it’s a great collection to go out on, though of course Bond would continue to live on under other authors, and of course, as an ongoing film franchise….
Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi (1983)- James Kahn
Following quickly on the heels of the novelisation of The Empire Strikes Back, Brian Daley delivered us one more Han Solo story, Han Solo and the Lost Legacy, which I read last year on vacation. Then, except for the ongoing Marvel comics series, it was all quiet on the Star Wars front until 1983, when…
Magnum P.I. (2019) Season 2 – DVD Review
Jay Hernandez returns as Thomas Sullivan Magnum, private investigator for Season Two, released today on DVD from Paramount Pictures. While Hernandez continues to make the role his own, and I’m becoming more and more of a fan of this reboot, I am still completely committed to the original, starring Tom Selleck (which leads to this…
