Smallville (2005) – Forever, and Commencement

Some people just don’t want to let high school go. And Smallville High school photographer, Brendan Nash (Steven Grayhm) is one of those, he also seems to have the powers to make that happen in Forever. First airing on 11 May, 2005 this episode was written by Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson.

Chloe (Allison Mack) is the first of the regulars to be grabbed, and she encounters a student who is awake and aware, but completely frozen it what appears to be a replica of the high school. Brendan has recreated everything to hold on, unwilling to face what the future may hold for him. Anyone who refuses to play along with Brendan’s fantasy is frozen in place. Then he grabs Lana (Kristin Kreuk) as well.

Looks like trouble. Can Clark (Tom Welling) and Lois (Erica Durance) figure out what is happening and save their friends?

Clark is still struggling to figure out what to do with his future, schooling-wise. Jonathan (John Schneider) works hard to push him farther out of the nest, as he feels that Clark is choosing to stay close to help out around the farm.

And the overall season arc with Lex (Michael Rosenbaum), the caves, Jason (Jensen Ackles), Genevieve (Jane Seymour) and the map and the stones? It’s moving it to a conclusion. Lionel (John Glover) reveals that Lana has the stones, and the map… because she’s the Chosen One. Sounds like we’re heading to a big finale! There are twists, turns, and we’re about to wrap it all up for another season.

Commencement closed out the season on 18 May, 2005. It was written by Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer.

Lana is possessed again by Isobel. She kills Genevieve (something Lex helps keep quiet, and keep Lana safe) with one of the Kryptonian crystals, and it triggers a cosmic event… another meteorite storm is headed towards Smallville. Clark may be the only one who can stop it.

Jor-El (Terrence Stamp) informs Clark that he will have to unite the three stones in the cave. But he’ll have to track them down from the people who have them. And the meteorites are already here.

We know that Lex has developed feelings for Lana, and that Lionel isn’t afraid to use that as leverage to get what he wants, which is the stones… everyone wants them. Will Clark be able to assemble them all and save the day?

And of course, there’s graduation. But it’s interrupted by the military warning everyone to head home and seek shelter. And Clark… he feels the storm may be his fault.

Surr Clark is able to save the day, mostly, but by the end of the episode, a number of the characters are left in precarious positions, including Clark, and that just means season five is going to have to answer a lot of questions before things can move forward.

And what the hell came down in the meteorite storm?

There is a lot going on, as pieces are moved around to set things up for the next season. There are changes coming.
