It’s evil twin trope time on Smallville with Onyx. It originally debuted on 13 April, 2005 and was written by Steven S. DeKnight.
LuthorCorp is experimenting with some kryptonite, developing black kryptonite, but the experiment goes sideways with Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) getting hit by some energy and being split in two – his good half an his evil half (sans goatee).
It’s really great to see Rosenbaum play off against himself, and you can see how evil his Lex can go, and what that will mean in the long run after the series concludes.
Clark (Tom Welling), who is still working on a number of problems in his own life, will have to find a way to stop Evil Lex before he can achieve his goal of global domination. Evil Lex also makes a pass at Lana (Kristin Kreuk), and practically blackmails her over the Talon. And he sees Clark use his powers! He also understands what kryptonite does to Clark.
His interactions with his father, Lionel (John Glover) causes Lionel to return to his previous scheming and dark ways, forgoing all the growth and changes he previously embraced.
Is there a way to re-combine them? There’s never a transporter malfunction when you need one, but apparently heat vision on a well-placed piece of kryptonite will help do the job. But after he is recombined, will he remember anything about Clark’s abilities? He says he doesn’t remember much… but what if he’s lying?
The episode also makes a needed nod to The Man in the Iron Mask.
This is a great turn for Rosenbaum, and he shows how evil Luthor can be. It’s smart, well-scripted, and lays the groundword for what the character will eventually become.
Luke Schelhaas penned Spirit which first aired on 20 April, 2005. The last episode was the evil twin story, this one is the body swap one.
Graduation is on the horizon, and that means Prom is even closer!
Dawn Stiles (Beatrice Rosen) is a lock to be Prom Queen, she’s also a bit of a pain. When she has an accident with a cliff and some meteor rocks she learns pretty quickly she can leap from body to body.
And as if all that wasn’t hard enough to deal with, she’s furious that Chloe (Allison Mack) is also in the running for Prom Queen thanks to an entry from Clark. Dawn starts jumping from body to body, seeing her life from other angles, and still driven to be Prom Queen.
There are also problems arising for Jason (Jensen Ackles) when a body, Bridget Crosby (Margot Kidder) is discovered on the grounds of the Luthor mansion. Did Lex have something to do with it? And what is he up to? When Jason digs into things, the body vanishes, there’s a new ‘old’ gazebo on the site, and there’s no record of a Bridget Crosby….
Or is there something even darker going on here… Jason?
Oh! And there’s Kandyse McClure as one of Dawn’s ‘friends.’
It’s also a lot of fun to see Annette O’Toole, Mack, Kreuk and Erica Durance play someone else, pretending to be there characters.
It’s a familiar trope, but Smallville makes its their own. But wow, we are coming up veery quickly on the end of the season.
