Smallville (2005) – Unsafe, and Pariah

Unsafe debuted on 26 January, 2005. It was written by Steven S. DeKnight and Jeph Loeb.

Alicia Baker (Sarah Carter) is back. Supposedly cured, she’s been released from the mental institution. But the first thing she does is go to see Clark (Tom Welling). For now, she’s unable to teleport, thanks to some low-tech solutions.

She does seem to make an honest effort about being open and truthful with him – there’s definitely a spark there – and Clark seems to want that as well. He’s truly eager to be and share with someone he doesn’t have to hide from. But, of course, things are darker than they appear. Dr. McBride (John Pyper-Ferguson) is a little devious, and he seems to want to control her, and tells her to stay away from Clark.

So she decides to make a run for it, and she’s going to take Clark with her… she gets her hand on some red kryptonite, which of course, alters his personality. And they are off to Vegas baby! But she takes the red kryptonite away, just as they are about to consummate their relationship. So she did the right thing, but then it all went wrong for her. And she’s teleporting again.

You know this isn’t going to end well for Alicia. She gets shot, keeping his secret. She’ll be ok.

And while the Kents are upset when they learn about everything, they understand what this connection means for Clark.

Lana (Kristin Kreuk) and Jason (Jensen Ackles) meet on a college campus, and it’s just weird. He’s saying things about her not being ready for a relationship. But Jason reveals that he doesn’t think their meeting was by accident, that it was all arranged by his mother (Jane Seymour).

And Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) is shocked when Lionel (John Glover) comes to see him with a peace offering. We still don’t know who organized Lionel’s release.

Pariah sees the Alicia arc come to its final close. It first aired on 2 February, 2005. It was written by Holly Harold.

Lois (Erica Durance) is back!

Alicia and Clark are trying out a romance, even though his friends and family are less than keen. And when Lana is attacked in her apartment by an unseen presence, Alicia is the prime suspect, though Clark refuses to believe it.

Though that belief is tried when he learns Alicia is no longer wearing her teleportation-inhibiting bracelet. With Clark’s faith in her shattered, she organizes things so Chloe (Allison Mack) witnesses some of Clark’s powers in action.

And if Alicia had a rough time in the previous episode, it’s nothing compared to what’s in store for her this time. Poor Clark, it’s a really emotional episode for the character.

But there’s also a character we’ve never seen around the Talon and Smallville High, Tim (Derek Hamilton).

And Jason’s mom, Genevieve, is back in town as well, and reaches out to Lex for some help. But he would rather work with Jason to find out what Genevieve is up to.

And what will Chloe do with the knowledge she now has? Lois advises that whatever she knows, she should keep it secret.

Lots of changes for characters, and nice arcs. Poor Alicia. I’m really enjoying where most of the season is going, the spellbook, witch stuff seems a little too Charmed and silly, but I like the rest of it.
