With four episodes to go, we are racing to the conclusion of Stargate: Universee. Common Descent first aired on 18 April, 2011. It was written by Robert C. Cooper, and directed by Peter DeLuise.
The drones and control ships are back. These automated systems are growing to a huge problem. How do they keep finding Destiny when she drops out of FTL? And remember that alternate Destiny? Well our crew stumbles across a planet with survivors. From 2000 years ago. The alternate Destiny may have traveled through time as it tumbled towards the sun.
These colonists came from another planet, the one the Destiny crew originally founded. Eli (David Blue) has figured out where the planet is, and suggests taking these survivors home.
Thanks to recordings, Eli see the lives of their other selves play out. We see them age, and their stories play out. It’s a glimpse at another possibility for them. But even as they risk themselves for the descendants, following a drone attack, they may be dooming themselves.
There are also some problems aboard ship, TJ (Alaina Huffman) tells Young (Louis Ferreira) that she’s getting sick calls from a number of crew, headaches, nausea… are they putting too much of a strain on Destiny’s resources?
Yes, they are. And that could mean that there are more troubles coming their way. And when they arrive at the descendant’s planet, what will they find? Things are definitely getting darker for this series, and the Destiny crew.
A solid episode and things are ramping up for the end.
Epilogue was written by Carl Binder, and it aired on 25 April, 2011.
Scott (Brian J. Smith), Eli and others land on the descendant’s planet, Novus. But it seems there are no survivors, caused by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes causing something akin to a nuclear winter. Magnificent cities are barren, but are there resources to be had? Is their knowledge to glean?
This allows the Destiny crew to see how things played out for their alternate selves on this planet, and what happened to them, and it.
They explore the texts and kinos. Apparently Eli wrote a number of educational texts. We also see conflict and tensions arise as the alternates settle on Novus. It wasn’t easy for them. There are relationships (some surprising), alliances, and mutual work towards something greater. Not to mention bad news as well, including a diagnosis for TJ.
And the problems on the planet are caused by? A black hole at the edge of the system. The Destiny has to get underway again before the planet comes apart. But they’ll have some supplies, the knowledge of their other lives (and perhaps more, knowledge and advanvces that may save lives), and a full ship with failing resources.
This is a solid episode, it’s an intriguing idea. It gives us a look at one possible future while the series rushes to it’s own conclusion. We’re almost at the end… so how will it conclude? We’ll find out next time.
