Get Smart (1968) – 99 Loses Control, The Wax Max, and Operation Ridiculous

Perhaps 99 (Barbara Feldon) got tired of waiting for Maxwell Smart (Don Adams) to make his move.

In 99 Loses Control 99 seems to be in love, and agrees to marry her new beau, Victor Royal (Jacques Bergerac) in this episode that debuted on 17 February, 1968. It was written by William Raynor and Miles Wilder.

As 99 gets ready to leave CONTROL behind, Max discovers that Victor is a KAOS agent.

There’s a bit of a dance between 99 and Smart as he almost admits how he feels, and we almost learn 99’s name. Victor calls her Susan, but by episode’s end, she claims that’s a cover.

Will Max be able to foil KAOS’ plan, or is 99 already on top of it? Tune in, because things are going to get dangerous for our heroes.

In case you didn’t catch the reference, Victor Royale owns a Casnio…. Casino Royale.

Oh, and look out for Bob Hope in an uncredited appearance.

There are lots of fun gags, and nice moments, and once again there’s a nice riff on Bond, including his ease of gambling – which plays out delightfully in a scene between Smart, Royale and a roulette wheel. To say nothing of the final showdown over a game of cards.

A fun little escapade.

The Wax Max was written and directed by James Komack. It first aired on 24 February, 1968.

Even a day off goes sideways for CONTROL agents Maxwell Smart and 99. The pair are spending a day together at an amusement park. After winning a Kewpie doll, the pair discover it contains plutonium – the passphrase was mistakenly guessed, and they were given the item because they were mistaken for someone else.

It seems a KAOS agent, the Waxman (Richard Devon) and KAOS are using the park as a front. And the pair find themselves in lots of trouble through the course of the day.

There’s a chamber of horrors where the Waxman leaves those who have failed him, a weapon-filled tunnel of love, and an encounter with Dracula and Frankenstein!

This one is silly, but a lot of fun. It rolls along pretty quick, but the trappings of the episode feel more akin to a Scooby-Doo episode than it does Get Smart. It’s still fun, but felt like the idea was simply Maxwell Smart at an amusement park.

Set it up and let the wackiness ensue.

Operation Ridiculous was written by Norman Paul, and debuted on 2 March, 1968.

Max and 99 are assisting Mr. Fitzmaurice (George Macready) who is doing a story on CONTROL. Unfortunately, his assistant, Miss Magruder (Patti Gilbert) is a KAOS agent who is working sabotaging the article, and making them look asinine.

Everyone is going out of their way to make CONTROL look great – the Chief (Edward Platt) even has his hair done, but KAOS seems determined to make sure things go badly.

Magruder uses a dart gun hidden in a pencil, and she takes out the Chief (and his rug) as well as Dr. Steele (Ellen Weston) and almost has Fittzmaurice convinced that CONTROL is a waste, but as things race tot their climax, Smart and 99 are able to save the day.

99 figues out the dart gun, while Max engages in fisticuffs with the KAOS agents who are working with Magruder.

In the end, one wonders how Fitzmaurice can publish his article, with all the top secret things he’s seen. But maybe that’s something they won’t have to worry about, considering how thee episode ends.

Adams and the rest of the cast remaining charming, but these entries this week haven’t been my faves though I did like Bob Hope showing up.
