Stargate: Atlantis (2008) – Quarantine, and Harmony

Carl Binder wrote Quarantine, which first aired on 18 January, 2008.

The entire city is locked down, when a false quarantine sounds and no one is where they will need tot be, if they are planning on saving the day.

McKay (David Hewlett) is nowhere near a computer. In fact he and Dr. Brown (Brenda James) are locked in her lab – he was meeting her for lunch, and had planned to propose. Keller (Jewel Staite) and Ronon (Jason Momoa) are in the med lab, Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) and Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) are trapped in a computer lab, and Carter (Amanda Tapping) and Zelenka (David Nykl) are in a lift.

Can they find a way to work across the things that separate them and cancel the quarantine before the sealed rooms run out of oxygen.

So with everything going on, will McKay’s negative attitude, being constrained from working on the problem, will he be able to pop to question, and will Katie Brown say yes? (Poor Rodney). And can Sheppard and Teyla (who looks ready to burst, something Sheppard will happen, as it always does in the movies) and Carter and Zelenka? They have some fun moments together. And the stuff with Keller and Ronon is charming. And Zelenka, he gets a heck of a moment when the episode reaches its climax.

This gives everyone in the city the chance to show that McKay doesn’t save the city every week. Someone else can.

It’s a very fun episode, that lets other characters do the problem-solving this time around.

Harmony was penned by Martin Gero and first hit airwaves on 25 Janaury, 2008.

McKay and Sheppard are given escort duty. They are to deliver a prospective queen, Harmony (Jodelle Ferland), but they are about to walk into an ambush. And encounter a very familiar enemy.

It’s fun to see Flanigan and Hewlett playing off of one another, there’s a real sense of chemistry there that makes their moments on screen really work. Speaking of chemistry, the trio, together on their quest, are great together. Harmony is pretty devious in a bratty kid kind of way, and having her spar with McKay makes for some hilarious beats.

But it’s not all fun and games… the ambush comes soon enough, it’s the Genii. But why do they want to kill Harmony? Is someone in her court going to reopen negotiations with them?

Can Harmony accomplish her quest (and avoid the fabled Beast of the forest) before she’s killed, either by the Genii or McKay? And how much of her goodie-goodie act does Sheppard really buy into? And what happens when she makes overtures for him to be her king?

It’s a fun, romp of an episode. And every time we think we’re clear of the Genii, they rear their heads once again.
