Stargate SG-1 (2007) – The Road Not Taken, and The Shroud

Carter (Amanda Tapping) finds herself in a parallel universe in The Road Not Taken. Written by Alan McCullough, this episode first debuted on 27 April, 2007.

While testing an experimental device based on Merlin’s work, Carter’s arrival in a different universe allows her the opportunity to help hide the planet from the Ori. In effect she saves the planet again! But this world isn’t sympathetic to the idea of helping her find a way back to her own world.

She confers with their universe’s Dr. Lee (Bill Dow), and tries to find help from familiar faces, though none of them seem available, or working at Stargate Command in this universe. Hammond (Don S. Davis) is still in charge though! And there’s a hilarious reveal that this Carter got marred to Rodney McKay (David Hewlett)! Maybe he can help. And Landry (Beau Bridges) is president.

They don’t want to let her go, not if she can provide some kind of edge over an approaching Ori attack. But everything isn’t peaceful and secure on Earth, the reveal of the existence of the Stargate program has caused problems, and there is martial law across America and the globe.

It’s not a free world, and Carter is troubled by what she’s seen and learning. This Stargate program has been all about technology, and promoting fear to keep people under martial law as they work to fight the Ori.

How will she get home if Landry won’t let her go? Maybe Mitchell (Ben Browder) can help? He’s wheelchair bound after the crash during the Antarctica battle.

It’s a dark story, giving glimpses at how everything we’ve seen in the series is one step away from being perverted, and used in a different way.

Smart, and well-written, this one is a harsh reality when compared to the optimistic view the series usually hints at.

But Samantha Carter will find a way home… she has to. This world is not a good place to be.

The Shroud first aired on 4 May, 2007 and was written by Robert C. Cooper from a story by Cooper and Brad Wright.

Daniel (Michael Shanks) has been found… as an Ori Prior.

SG-1 is surprised to discover that the Ori, working on converting a world that they are visiting is none other than their missing teammate.

Hoping that there is some of their former friend in their, Mitchell, Carter, Teal’c (Christopher Judge), and Vala (Claudia Black) kidnap him, and with some welcome help from O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson), perhaps they can find a way to restore him.

Daniel says he’s fine, and recounts what happened between he and Adria (Morena Baccarin). And perhaps he is okay. He still had some part of Merlin in his mind protecting him. He has a plan, but he needs SG-1 to turn off the wormhole that is keeping the supergate active, so he can use it to take to the Ori ship and weapon back through to destroy the Ori.

But can they trust him? Things are complicated by the arrival of Woolsey (Robert Picardo) with orders from the IOA.

Things aren’t all they seem to be, and there’s a plan at work. But whose is it?

And as the episode ends, was it enough? Will it be enough to win the war?
