That’s two for two for the Philippous as far as I’m concerned. I was delightfully impressed with how much I enjoyed Talk to Me. And as soon as I discovered they had another film out there, it shot right to the top of my viewing list.
And Bring Her Back, it’s an experience. It’s unnerving, psychological, gory, creepy, and incredibly well-executed.
Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong) are adrift after their father unexpectedly dies. As the young pair are getting rehomed, Andy is offered his own place, while Piper, who is visually challenged, is offered a place with Laura (Sally Hawkins) until Andy is 18 and can petition for custody.
The pair insist on being kept together, so Laura agrees to take them both on. But from the off, something is incredibly amiss. There is gaslighting, manipulation, and a creepy video that Laura keeps watching. Not to mention another kid is living with them, a troubled mute named Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips).
I went into this one, with almost no knowledge of what the plot was, an that is definitely the way to dive into it. As you, Andy and Piper try to sort out what is going on in this house, things get wilder, creepier, and grosser, and take frightening and unexpected turns.

It’s very well done, the gore, and yes, body horrror come out of nowhere, and is so unnerving.
Sally Hawkins is top-notch in this film and she is able to walk the fine line her character needs throughout the film.
There are themes of grief, loss, secrets and family running through the entire film, and it works like gangbusters. And each of the cast members brings those themes to life through their character arcs.
Phillips is absolutely terrifying as Oliver, and the more you learn about the character, the more frightening he becomes. And yet, for all the terror the character brings, Phillips is able to ground his performance with some really poignant moments.
With two horror films under their belt, I can’t wait to see what they give us next. Both films are definitely supernatural in nature, but they also don’t have to explain everything up front, or even a long the way.
There are things we aren’t meant to understand, and sometimes that is the scariest thing. What is lurking behind everything that happens in this film, or in Talk to Me? I hope we never find out.
But damn I can’t wait for more stories! And the Philippou brothers have confirmed that both films take place within the same universe. So will they be more clearly connected down the line, is there even more spookiness out there to be explored? I can’t wait to find out.
