TIFF 25: EPiC – Elvis Presley in Concert dir. Baz Luhrmann

Acclaimed director brings Elvis Presley to the big screen (or the biggest screen if you can see it in IMAX) in a way you’ve never seen before. A look at his Vegas residency concerts, by putting you in a front row seat for the show.

With a quick recap of his career the concert film throws us right into the music and it all rocks. The film’s footage is beautifully cleaned up and restored, providing a sharp and vibrant picture that puts you right there on the stage, and in the audience. Luhrmann slides the footage from Presley’s rehearsals to performances to interviews, melding it all into one fantastically crafted concert piece.

Luhrmann has always worked well with visuals and music, and this project seems tailor made for his abilities. It’s loud, fantastic, and shows, without a doubt, how charismatic Presley was on stage. Presley’s presence is undeniable, and he looks like he gives his all in every single performance. He’s funny, appealing, and man, the King put on a great show.

Whether you’re a fan or not, this should be on every music fan’s list. It’s so… alive! The bass thrums your seat, rumbles in your belly, and your feet can help but keep time to the beat. Luhrmann has delivered an iconic piece of music cinema, and it delivers on its promise of seeing The King like you’ve never seen.

The film gives us all the songs you expect, but it’s also cool to see him cover other music of the time like tracks by The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel. He delivers his hip shaking tunes, his ballads, and even some gospel, and he does it with that fantastic voice of his.

Sure, you could wait until this one hits streaming, but you’d be missing an incredible experience. I can’t recommend enough that you should see this in the theater with the biggest screen and loudest sound system possible. Make it an event, and celebrate The King!

EPiC – Elvis Presley in Concert screens Friday and Sunday at the Scotiabank (that means IMAX!) at 7:30pm and 2:15pm respectively. Put on those Blue Suede Shoes and go!
