Stargate SG-1 (2005) – Gemini, and Prometheus Unbound

The Replicators are back! The mid-season break for season eight is over, and things kick off with a bang. Gemini was written by Peter DeLuise and was first aired on 21 January, 2005.

Stargate Command receives an out of date gate code, It belongs to Carter (Amanda Tapping) and when they send a probe through the gate, they discover Replicator Carter! She reveals her creation by Fifth (G. Patrick Currie) and asks for the SGC’s help in destroying her.

The Carters meet up at the Alpha Site, with Teal’c (Christopher Judge) armed with a disruptor – which may or not work. Repli-Carter agrees to help them develop a new weapon to stop the Replicators if they will use it on her. She warns that they are coming.

But is she being completely honest with the SGC?

Fifth has sent her in as part of a plan, but what of she has plans of her own?

When Fifth begins a transit to the Alpha Site, will SG-1 have time to complete the weapon before he arrives? And can Repli-Carter be trusted at all? Carter wants to take her home to Earth to protect her from Fifth, but Repli-Carter makes her own final play. She’s determined to get away from Fifth and fires the weapon.

When the Carters have a talk, outside of time, Repli-Carter was intent on wiping out Fifth, and assuming command of the Replicators herself. And if she knows what Carter will do before she does, how will the SGC be able to fight them when they meet again?

Prometheus Unbound sees the return of Hammond (Don S. Davis) and the introduction of a new character to bother Daniel (Micheal Shanks), that of Vala (Claudia Black).

Written by Damian Kindler, it was first broadcast on 28 January, 2005.

Hammond asks Daniel to join him aboard the Prometheus for a trip to Atlantis. He’s been given command of the Prometheus, and their mission is to find out why there’s been no contact with Atlantis since the expedition went through.

En route, they receive a distress signal, and respond. But it’s a bit of a trap. It allows a Kull super-soldier on board, and it takes control of the Prometheus, stranding Hammond and the crew, but for Daniel, aboard an Alkesh.

But it’s not really a drone, it’s actually a bit of a con artist and a thief, Vala. And there’s some wonderful play and banter between the two.

Hammond and his crew work to repair the Alkesh while Daniel and Vala trade barbs and punches and a little sexual chemistry. There’s also some nice reveals about who Vala is, her history, and why she does what she does.

And what happens when the Prometheus reaches the destination Vala programmed? Lots and lots of trouble. And a great name check by Daniel.

Vala is able to escape by episode’s end, and the Prometheus has to head home to repair its damage before it can attempt another trip to Atlantis.

I’m sure Vala will be back…
