Baywatch (2017) – Seth Gordon

I’ll be honest, I quite enjoyed the big screen adaptation of the cult favorite Baywatch. One could argue it’s not as entertaining as the 21 Jumpstreet films, but it ended up being damned fun, and pokes fun at the entire series, while honoring it at the same time.

And it’s got a beautiful-looking cast to appeal to all viewers. Dwayne Johnson is Mitch Buchannon, a completely dedicated and beloved lifeguard who along with his crew finds himself embroiled in weekly adventures. He and his crew, Stephanie (Ilfenesh Hadera), and C.J. (Kelly Rohrbach) are recruiting three open positions.

The team is soon filled out with Summer (the charming, and absolutely stunning Alexandra Daddario), Ronnie (Jon Bass), and fallen, but cocky, Matt (Zac Efron). Matt pushes back at Mitch every chance he gets, they’re lifeguards, they don’t work cases! Mitch soon proves that wrong as he begins to investigate a dangerous drug washing up on the shore, which could be a small part of a land grab by Victoria Leeds (Priyanka Chopra Jonas).

There’s lot of sexy raunchiness, and adult humor. The film is well aware of the reason people watched the original series; goofy melodrama, sun, beach, and beautiful bodies in slow motion.

This movie has that in aces, and while some people may have been bummed that the subject matter wasn’t treated a touch more seriously, I think it found the exact right tone, and I laughed a lot.

Matt has to find a way to work as part of the team, and as he learns to work together, he becomes as dedicated as Mitch. That’s not going to stop him from pursuing Summer.

There’s also some really goofy, and understandable fun happening between C.J. and Ronnie – who feels like a stand-in for all those guys who were sitting in their armchairs watching the show when it aired.

It’s loud, goofy, raunchy, and it looks like the entire cast is having a great time. Everyone gets their moment, it’s got a fun soundtrack, and there is lots of banter, and some really funny moments. Each of the cast brings something fun, and playful to the screen, and I really enjoyed this outing.

Is it going to appeal to everyone? Not in the least. But it does feel like a worthy successor to an iconic television show that was all about running in slow motion in bathing suits.

And of course, there are a couple of fun nods to the original series, which don’t come as a surprise at all because they are listed in the credits – which is too bad, because it could have been a nice surprise.

Overall, fun, playful, and I liked it. It’s not changing the world, but it’s just a silly ride. Just like the show.
