This is it, the last two episodes of Magnum P.I. They aired back to back on 3 January, 2024, First up, Ashes to Ashes. It was written by Tera Tolentino, Andrew Blazensky and Barbie Kligman.
T.C. (Stephen Hill) and Mahina (Emily Alabi) come to Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and Higgins (Perdita Weeks) for help on an arson case. Mahina doesn’t believe the woman arrested for it, as well as manslaughter, is innocent.
As the pair dig into the case, they find a trail of break-ins and a prison break, all in a convoluted plan that put an innocent family at risk.
The best part of the episode follows Rick (Zachary Knighton) and Kumu (Amy Hill). She is helping Rick out at the veterans help line, once again highlighting the series dedication to those who served, and their continued need for support after that service.
When someone going by the name D.J. (Drew Rausch) calls in with a blocked number, he confides that he just wants someone to be there for him while he slowly passes away. He’s already taken the pills that will end his life.
It’s a tough storyline to get through, and the episode and the characters do not pull their punches. It deals incredibly well with veterans, distress, and the great service that helplines give. I really enjoyed the Kumu and Rick storyline in this episode, and it was really nice to see them getting the lion’s share of the screentime in this one.
The Big Squeeze is the series finale. It was written by David Wolkove and one of the showrunners, Eric Guggenheim.
Higgins is anxious when she discovers a diamond ring in Magnum’s drawer, worried he’s going to propose, and not sure how she’ll deal with it.
Bedrosian (Patrick Fabian) is back, blacmailing Magnum and Higgins into doing a job for them. He has audio evidence of the prison break that could not only put them in jail, but put Katsumoto (Tim Kang) in jeopardy as well.
The job requires the investigators to invesitgate a murder Bedrosian dones’t want HPD finding out about.
Meanwhile, T.C. is thinking about upping his Island Hoppers game which may mean taking his money out of La Mariana. What’s that mean for Rick? Well, maybe he’ll find a new partner in time for everything to wrap up nicely for all involved. Of course he does, he and Kumu will be partners!
Everything will get their moment to say goodbye, to have a last moment to shine, and we’ll leave them behind at La Mariana, happy and continuing their lives with new and exciting adventures to come that we won’t be a part of.
It was a nice incarnation, and the characters made this one shine.
That’s it, that’s the series and like I said, it’s not the original but it was fun. Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD is available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha.
