Magnum P.I. (2023) – The Retrieval, and Run with the Devil

Jin (Bobby Lee) is back in The Retrieval.

Written by Gene Hong and Katie Varney, this episode first debuted on 1 November, 2023.

Jin comes to T.C. (Stephen Hill) for some help when Jin’s ex-partner Bo (Kirk Fox) is released from prison, and wants his cut from a previous heist to pay for his protection while he was inside. So they are off in search of Jin’s old washing machine, and the treasure map tucked inside it.

The Jin story is a little goofier than usual, and is a bit broad, making it my least favorite aspect of the episode.

Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and Higgins (Perdita Weeks), meanwhile, take a case involving a missing gamer whose fellow players only know his on-screen handle. It leads to a dangerous discovery including some missing embryos.

This gives Magnum and Higgins to chat about children and how they would raise them. But the case is also going to take the pair through a twisting series of reveals that lead them to the real criminal, and now, murderer.

The character stuff with Magnum and Higgins is nice, Katsumoto (Tim Kang) and Rick (Zachary Knighton) get a little short shrift in this one, but they’ve had some nice stuff recently, so I guess they earned a break. The kid stuff, and how they have differing opinions about how they would raise their kids adds a nice new spin to the growing relationship and how it’s progressing.

Oh! and there’s Star Trek’s Linda Park!!

Run with the Devil sees Magnum and Higgins working with a young Amish boy, Jacob Fischer (Tait Blum) who has come to the island searching for his missing sister. Is she leaving the religion or is she actually in trouble?

Written by David Wolkove the episode first debuted on 15 November, 2023.

As the trio begin the search for Hannah (Jessica Treska), the trail leads them down a troubling path, something Hannah may have been forced into, and with some help from Katsumoto and HPD, Magnum and Higgins may be able to solve the case, save Hannah and reunite the siblings. But it’s not going to be an easy case to resolve, and Jacob may not have told them the whole truth.

At La Mariana, Rick is working to find a date for T.C. for the annual Marine Corps Ball. He even tries to get renowned surfer, Malia Manuel to attend. But what if Rick and Suzy (Betsy Phillips) are working on getting Mahina (Emily Alabi) back into T.C.’s life.

And once again, Higgins and Magnum have a chat about the idea of god as they continue to learn more about one another.

The episode brings us closer to the end of the series, there’s a few more to go but I am loving my exploration of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada, aloha!
