Final Destination 2 (2003) – David R. Ellis

Those pesky kids have avoided Death again, and now it’s coming for them one at a time.

This time out, the anniversary of the flight crash in the first film is coming up, and maybe that’s what triggers a vision for Kim (A.J. Cook). She sees a huge pile-up that will claim the life of her, her friends, and countless strangers, and scarred a number of viewers and kept them from driving behind logging trucks for their entire lives.

Paired up with a cop, Burke (Michael Landes), the pair and the rest of the survivors try to figure out what is going on, and how to survive the next ninety minutes. With a little research, Kim discovers that there was one last survivor from the previous film, she’s locked herself in a mental institution to stay safe. Welcome back Clear, YAY Ali Larter!

They also get some info from Mr. Bludworth (Tony Todd) and maybe, just maybe some of them will survive to the end credits. The kills seem to be a little bloodier, and a little more intricately created than the first film. There’s some really nice moments though the actors don’t seem able to deliver the caliber of performances (which weren’t that outstanding) from the first film, but it was enough to get bums in seats, and continue to build the franchise.

There’s a lot of fun in the series, I really enjoyed the kills, and I do adore some of the cast. Larter is always a joy, and throw in Keegan Connor Tracy, and I quite happily settled in for this installment. I don’t know what that’s going to mean for the rest of the series though.

And while the kills are solid, that opening car crash sequence is top-notch, and fantastically orchestrated. Oh, and once again, British Columbia stands in for New York State, and there are a lot of familiar Canadian faces amongst the supporting cast.

The franchise isn’t one of the best horror franchises out there, but it does end up being fairly entertaining, and you can tell where the film’s budget was spent – making those kills look fantastic. And they really do. There were a lot of ‘oofs’ coming from me as I watched a number of the cast get killed off, which means I was definitely enjoyed this one.

Let’s see if I still enjoy the next couple of installments in the series.
