Magnum P.I. (2023) – Out of Sight, Out of Mind, and Charlie Foxtrot

Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and Higgins (Perdita Weeks) have their first real tiff, which is something that both regret when Higgins ends up in serious trouble.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind was written by David Slack and debuted on 16 April, 2023.

Magnum has to have a chat with Childs (Micheal Rady) about the events in the previous episode that are tied to Magnum’s Greene investigation. While Childs digs deeper, Magnum and Higgins take a case that sees Higgins go undercover in a psychiatric hospital to investigate the death of a health worker.

And of course, there’s more going on than what we see on the surface, and there is going to be a lot of trouble coming toward them. Juliet ends up getting caught and drugged by the episode’s baddies, where she has troubling dreams about Magnum attempting to propose to her, and then dying in front of her from a gunshot wound, and being questioned by another version of herself about the death of Richard, the man she was in love with for years. Will it affect her relationship with Magnum or will she admit to her fear of losing Magnum?

Meanwhile, on the mainland, Katsumoto (Tim Kang) and Dennis (Lance Lim) are doing a university tour to find somewhere that Dennis may like to attend. But they run afoul of some of some racist locals in one of the university towns. It puts a bit of a strain on their trip and their relationship, but Katsumoto gives Dennis some great advice and delivers an important message.

And Rick (Zachary Knighton) with some help from T.C. (Stephen Hill) settles into a houseboat, clearing out of the estate, but not moving in with Suzy (Betsy Phillips) and the baby.

As the episode closes out, Childs makes a discovery that the mercs in Greene’s case know who Magmum is but he triggers an explosion, and T.C. is attacked at Island Hoppers and left in jeopardy until…

Charlie Foxtrot opens where the previous episode left off, T.C. has been shot and is looking down the barrel of a gun when Shammy (Christopher Thornton) shoots his attacker.

Written by David Wolkove this episode debuted on 23 April, 2023.

And Shammy races to get T.C. to the hospital, the mercs find their way onto Robin’s estate where Magnum and Higgins were hoping to have a quiet evening after the day’s events. Dealing with the mercs they escape only to discover that Rick has been grabbed, T.C. is in surgery and things are going badly for everyone very quick.

While Magnum, Higgins and Katsumoto work on tracking down Rick’s location, T.C. is in surgery with Suzy, Kumu (Amy Hill) and Cade (Martin Martinez) keeping watch. And if he survives the surgery will he be okay?

Rick is able to elude his pursuers, leading them on a chase, but he can only outrun the mercs for so long, will he be found by his friends before then? It’s a tightly paced, well made episode that entertains, and has some wonderful character beats.

It also wraps up the Buck Greene storyline by revealing who was after the team and why. So what happens next? Before we move on though…

One question I have is, how the hell did Katsumoto get back to the island so quick from the mainland? This was supposed to be the same evening as the previous episode, where we saw Katsumoto and Dennis somewhere very cold on the mainland looking at colleges.

We’re halfway through the final season, so what else is coming for our private investigators and our group of friends in Hawaii? I’ll find out as I explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
