Magnum (Jay Hernandez) admits to Rick (Zachary Knighton) that he may have feelings for Higgins (Perdita Weeks) in The Long Sleep. But she may already have plans and ready to move onto her next relationship, did Thomas miss his chance?
Written by Mike Diaz, Andre Jackson and David Wolkove, this episode, the penultimate of the season, first aired on 29 April, 2022.
Cade (Martin Martinez) and T.C. (Stephen Hill) are thrown a curve ball when Cade’s biological grandmother (Elpidia Carrillo) shows up on the island to meet Cade, with Katsumoto (Tim Kang) serving as middle-man.
T.C. is worried about what this means for he and Cade, but he’s not going to stand in the young boy’s way if he decides to go. In fact he recommends Cade go see what its like, but can come back anytime, or not go at all, but T.C. will be there every step of the way. It’s great to see Hill given so much to do with these character arcs. You can make the same argument for Knighton’s Rick especially with the reintroduction of Suzy (Betsy Phillips) and her pregnancy.
Oh, and then there’s the case of the week, when Greg Nettles (John Bobek) hires the pair to find out what happened to him. He was drinking with Angie (Teressa Liane) in Wisconsin, and woke up two days later in Hawaii with blood on him. He also has a gun on him.
The pair dig into the case, and it leads to a number of surprises about Greg’s familial past, and as the banter between the two of them continue, you can see that both of them are dancing around their feelings for one another, because they are worried about the dynamic and how it will affect the rest of the group if things don’t go well. Something that Higgins goes to see her therapist about as the episode closes.

Close to Home finished the season on 6 May, 2022. Written by one of the showrunners, Eric Guggenheim, this one kicks into high gear as Magnum and Higgins head into a correctional facility after Katsumoto and his ex-wife Beth (Shawna Christensen) are abducted by a brutal criminal, Ray Nasano (David Anders).
With Beth being held to make Katsumoto do their bidding, and he reaches out to Magnum and Higgins for help. Someone wants Katsumoto’s ex-partner dead and he’s in prison, so a plan kicks into gear. They have to figure out a way to rescue Beth and keep things from going sideways. It’s tightly-paced and played out with a number of tense moments that wraps up the season brilliantly.
And that’s the main story, but there’s Suzy giving birth, Suzy’s surgery following it, the fallout from Katsumoto going rogue and of course, the Magnum/Higgins things that culminate in a kiss to close out the episode.
This was the last episode to broadcast by CBS, but the series returned for another season on NBC, and next time I jump into that fifth and final season as I explore more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
