Starman (1987)- Appearances, and The Probe

Paul (Robert Hays) and Scott (Christopher Daniel Barnes) find themselves stuck in the middle of nowhere, forty miles from a town, when their camper breaks down. They find a remote farm where a family is hiding away in Appearances.

Written by Micheal Marks this episode first debuted on 16 January, 1987.

Frank (Don Dubbins) is hiding from something and only ventures into town once a month and is trying to keep people away from his daughter, Julie (Nadine Van der Velde), who is blind. Her mother, Mary (Carol Vogel) is a little more accommodating, but no one but Julie is happy to have some company on the farm while the camper is repaired.

When Julie’s hand is burned by acid in an accident, Paul is able to heal her, but then, knowing Paul has abilities, thanks to the sphere, in a religious fervor she begs him to heal her sight.

Paul can’t or won’t, and Frank fears that Paul is interfering with his daughter and demands they leave, only for the father-son duo to discover her hiding out in the back of the camper clinging to the belief that Paul can heal her.

When things go wrong in the nearby town, Paul reveals (again) his true nature to Julie and also helps her to realize that despite the fact that he can’t heal her sight, there’s nothing broken or wrong about her.

This allows Julie to finally confront her parents about living in fear and oppression at the farm. There’s a possibility of something more for this family as they come to grips with their secrets.

The pair move on at the end of the episode and aren’t even on the run because George Fox (Michael Cavanaugh) didn’t even show up in this episode.

The Probe was written by Syrie James and debuted on 30 January, 1987.

Paul and Scott are in a college town which allows Scott to continue his education, and Paul to take some jobs around the campus including helping out in a psychology experiment, which introduces him to Dr. Katherine Bradford (Kay Lenz).

Katherine is actually an astronomer but she’s walked away from the department because she wasn’t happy to discover that her funding was coming from the military.

Paul, meanwhile, begins to realize he’s falling in love with Katherine. And she seems to be falling for him too, but he doesn’t really know how to navigate these things. So it’s a fun little episode as the pair connect.

Scott, however, is not happy about this new romance and he points out that they’ll have to leave, Paul knows Scott is right, but can’t fix his feelings, but attempts to stem the growing relationship between he and Katherine.

All of this will have an effect on her work, and of course, cause Paul to reveal his true nature to her just before Fox arrives in town.

There are a few more weeks of journey with Paul and Scott yet as I delve into Starman: The Complete Series, a fantastic extra on the 4K edition of John Carpenter’s Starman which can be found in Sony’s Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection Volume 4, available now.
