Rick (Zachary Knighton) reveals to Magnum (Jay Hernandez) that Robbie (Devon Sawa) is on the run from a murder charge in Chicago and the feds want Rick to help bust him.
While the group investigates Robbie with some help from Lia (Chantal Thuy), Higgins (Perdita Weeks) and Magnum recruit Kumu (Amy Hill) to investigate a retirement home where someone has stolen Joseph’s (Richard Gant), one of the residents, life savings.
A New Lease on Death was written by Barbie Kligman from a story by Kligman and Zachary Knighton. It first aired on 19 November, 2021.
It’s fun to see Higgins and Kumu working together, and the Rick story is enjoyably done, especially as Magnum sees the possibility that something else is going on when he learns the investigating agent is on leave, and not working officially.
Magnum also knows that something strange is going on with Higgins, but doesn’t know she’s doing assignments for MI6.
The Higgins/Kumu story is fun, but the Rick story and how it involves the characters, their relationships, and what they will do for one another is well thought out and executed. It seems that Rick was willing to risk it all for his friend, one last debt being paid off… but just as Robbie is leaving for the docks in Rick’s Porsche, it blows up!
Rick is going to want to get back at the people who did this, and you know Magnum and T.C. (Stephen Hill) are going to be involved in helping their friend.
Oh! And Richard Masur guest stars as a resident who may have a thing for Kumu.

A Fire in the Ashes picks up with the literal cleanup of the explosion. Rick has a real tough time dealing with it, and the fact that Higgins doesn’t show up to check on their friend triggers Magnum to start following and investigating what is going on.
And that could be a good thing, because her latest assignment involves her going undercover into a group that wishes to infiltrate MI6. She asks Magnum to please stay out of it, but we all know that isn’t going to happen.
Higgins may be a little over her head when she’s required to conduct an interrogation on her captured handler, Eve (Marsha Thomason), who is then executed in front of her when the rogue agent, Sean Cavendish (Greg Ellis) rumbles that Higgins is a mole for MI6.
Katsumoto (Tim Kang) is minding Rick with protective custody and is working the case to keep Rick out of trouble and doing something that could put him in it. He is an exemplary sniper after all.
Written by David Slack, this episode was first broadcast on 3 December, 2021. It’s tightly paced, has a number of emotional payoffs, and also wraps up several story threads before moving forward with new tales.
There’s more Thursday as I enjoy more of Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
