Magnum P.I. (2021) – Cry Murder, and Whispers of Death

Peter Weller returns to the director’s chair for Cry Murder. Written by series showrunners Peter M. Lenkov and Eric Guggenheim from a story by Emily Singer, it first aired on 9 April, 2021.

Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and Higgins (Perdita Weeks) take a case helping an insurance company in their recovery of a harvest of white truffles that have been stolen. There’s a ticking clock to recover them before they go bad, and things are complicated by someone dropping off a baby, Hiapo, at the estate’s main gate.

While Kumu (Amy Hill) seeks leads on the baby’s mother, Magnum and Higgins cart Hiapo around which is, of course, meant to elicit some comedic moments between the pair as well as let them show different sides of their characters as their relationship with children and babies is explored.

The pair investigate the restaurant and so they have a lead on a possible culprit, which means they’ll have to leave little Hiapo with Rick (Zachary Knighton) and T.C. (Stephen Hill). But as the case continues they find out that the white truffles are imitations delivered by a less-than-reputable supplier, something the restaurant owner may have known all along.

Not only do they wrap up the case, but they are also able to track down Hiapo’s young mother, and give them both a shot at something better, together.

A fun, if somewhat predictable episode, but it’s nice to see Kumu in the loop for this episode, and it’s also interesting to see how all the characters interact with a baby, and how the young fella’s presence changes them.

Whispers of Death first aired on 16 April, 2021 and was written by Tera Tolentino.

Sylvia (Lelea’e Kahalepuna-Wong), a psychic, wants to hire Magnum and Higgins because she’s had a vision of a murder that is going to take place. It could be an easy $2000 for the pair if she’s not a real psychic, but… if she is?

And what happens if she turns up dead during the run of the investigation? Is there a rational explanation for her abilities, and will it help Magnum and Higgins stop a murder before it’s committed?

The pair soon learn that the woman is in trouble because of who her husband really is, it’s going to be a rough and dangerous go, but perhaps Magnum and Higgins will be able to sort it all out safely.

Meanwhile, Katsumoto (Tim Kang) is involved in the recovery of some stolen jewels, which was accompanied by Kumu’s (Amy Hill) contact info. It’s been mentioned before, but Kumu worked briefly for Imedla Marcos (Christine Jugueta) in the 1980s, and apparently the jewelry ties back to her work then. After some reflection on her past, she may know who did it.

Next week, we finish up season three and dive into season four as I explore more casework from Magnum P.I. – The Complete Series on DVD, available now from Paramount Canada. Aloha!
