Magnum P.I. (2020/2021) – No Way Out, and First the Beatdown, Then the Blowback

Magnum (jay Hernandez), Higgins (Perdita Weeks) and T.C. (Stephen Hill) find themselves in a Die Hard situation in No Way Out. Written by Barbie Kligman the episode was first broadcast on 18 December, 2020.

The trio are at the immigration offices as someone is investigating the fact that Higgins’ name has shown up on two marriage licenses in the past couple of months, but no marriage. The man on the case begins to suspect that the trio are lying, but things are complicated when armed gunmen dhow up in the building and a hostage situation ensues.

Reaching out to Katsumoto (Tim Kang) to call in the calvary, the trio begins to John McClane around the building to figure out what is going on, and what the baddies are up to. Woven through the narrative is the trio bickering about whose fault it is that Immigration didn’t buy their story.

It seems the villains are demanding the release of a criminal, and our heroes are going to have to work together and put themselves at risk every step of the way if they are going to survive. There are fisticuffs, questions of trust, and Katsumoto with Rick (Zachary Knighton) at his side works to keep the Tactical Team from breaching and risking the lives of the hostages.

Happily, the story resolves itself and the Immigration officer confronts them about their charade, Magnum admits to it, but because of how the trio worked together to resolve the situation agrees to keep it quiet, and welcomes Higgins officially to America.

First the Beatdown, and Then the Blowback was written by Eric Guggenheim and Mike Diaz from a story by Aaron Lam and Peter M. Lenkov. It first aired on 8 January, 2021.

Magnum and Higgins have a lot of fun fighting with one another following Magnum’s failed attempt to breach the Estate in an exercise, but things change pretty quick when Kumu (Amy Hill) is arrested for stealing a Hawaiian artifact from a collector in order to return it to its proper resting place. It seems someone has been selling artifacts to the wealthy, having stolen them from their proper owners and resting places.

At the same time, Magnum and Higgins find themselves working with a father, Izzy (Terrell Tilford) find his missing daughter, an up-and-coming mixed martial arts fighter, Kai (Katy O’Brian) who has been kidnapped by a Yakuza gang to throw a fight. It’s a difficult situation for all of them to be in, and is there any way out of it?

The group is able to save the day. Kai is able to win the fight, and maybe, for now at least ,Katsumoto and HPD have stopped this aspect of the Yakuza from infiltrating Hawaii.

But what about Kumu? In the process of burying the artifact, returning it to its burial site, the police show up to arrest her, but with a little help from Dr. Cunha (Kimee Balmilero) they are able to avoid any jail time, the collector is none the wiser, and things are resolved to honor Hawaiian heritage.

There’s a touch-in with the narrative threads about Higgins’ doctor boyfriend and Magnum’s Range Rover stalker.
